Flint Generals News Release
The Flint Generals begin the week by hosting the season's second Player of the Month Luncheon at Wizeguy's Pizza on S. Saginaw St. in Flint. All fans and media are welcome to the luncheon that will honor the players on the team that received league recognition during the month of December as well as the team's player of the month.
The next installment of exciting hockey comes this Friday, January 8th in Muskegon to kick off the thirteenth week of the 2009-10 season. The Lumberjacks visited Perani Arena Sunday afternoon for what turned into a shooting gallery. Muskegon continues to be one of the top two teams in the league but the Generals have only suffered one outright loss to the 'Jacks this season.
Saturday the G-Men return home to entertain the Dayton Gems for their ninth meeting. The last contest was a 3-0 decision, and Rob Nolan's first professional shutout. The Gens have greatly improved from the start of the season and have been playing very well at home, so they surely look to make up some ground on the Gems in the season series and in the standings- Dayton is only 5 points ahead of them in the standings.
Sunday they revisit L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon. The Gens have really struggled on the road this season, and two trips to Muskegon will be a good test as to how far the team has truly come over the past few weeks. This will be the second matchup in three games and third in four.
While the squad still seems to be struggling to string wins together, they have definitely turned a corner. They are 5-3-0-2 in their last ten games and have garnered 8 of 10 possible points in their last five games. Other streaks the team and fans hope continue are John Ronan's point and goal streaks. Ronan has fashioned himself a nice stretch of offensive production. He has netted 8 goals in the past seven games but has at least one point in the last eleven games. His goal tirade is the current and season high, while he is two games shy of tying Robin Bouchard for the season high point streak title.
A Big Flint Generals Thank You: The Generals and the Flint community rallied over the past six games to provide much needed help to Carriage Town Ministries, an organization that reaches out to the area's less fortunate. The Gens and CTM teamed up to run a food drive with the goal of filling ten 32 gallon "Barrels of Blessings" by January 3rd. Between having barrels at the games and the players being "Guest Baggers" at VG's, enough donations were made to reach the goal. The Generals want to thank all those who donated food and money to help those in the community.
Looking Back: Wednesday night the Quad City Mallards avenged their Dec. 20th 6-5 overtime loss to the Generals with a 4-3 shootout win at Perani Arena. The Gens struck first but the Mallards answered with two power play goals on two opportunities. Flint regained the lead in the second period but goal with.39 seconds left in regulation by Quad City sent the game to OT and then a shootout.
Saturday was the first game of the 2010 for Flint as they welcomed backed Fort Wayne. The Komets last visit was the first win for the Gens over the reigning champs this season and the first contest decided by more than one point in the season series thus far. For the second time in as many games, a shootout was required to decide the winner with the Gens coming out on top and giving them two straight victories over the Komets.
Sunday Muskegon came to town and once again regulation was not enough. The Gens came back in the second period with 3 goals to take a 4-3 lead after falling 3-1 but 'Jacks were too persistent, coming from behind twice with a goal in the late stages of the third tying the score at 5-5. Jamie Schaafsma scored for the Gens but both John Mori and Pascal Rheaume missed, giving Muskegon the "W."
