Generals Upend IceHawks
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals played host to the Port Huron Friday night at Perani Arena and returned home with a big win over the league leading IceHawks 6-3.
Following a 6-1 defeat Tuesday at McMorran, the 2,047 fans were treated to an excellent start to the game by the men in blue, with a goal just .31 seconds into play at the hands of Alec Kirschner. Jamie Schaafsma shot the puck deep into the right corner and Kirschner chased it down, beating the defense. He skated with the puck around the net, into the slot and to the top of the right circle finally taking the shot. With less than three minutes to play in the first, Rob Nolan made multiple incredible saves as Port Huron was jammed in front of the net banging away. The period concluded with big bodied Armando Scarlato and Jason Kostadine dropping the gloves just inside the Generals blueline.
Flint continued to put on the pressure in the middle period despite only three shots on the IceHawks netminder. Nolan was spectacular making at least three highlight reel worthy saves, all in the second half of the period. The first came with about 8:26 to play when a Port Huron jersey was standing at the side of an open net and Nolan managed to stick his left pad out just in time.
Just over four minutes later, he made an incredible glove save while the Generals were on the penalty kill. The Gens added their second of the night on the power play when Jake Pence and took a clear pass across the crease from Tony Tuzzolino and went top shelf on Russo. And then with .36 seconds Nolan came up big again scrambling from the ice to keep it 2-0.
Port Huron slashed the lead to one with an early third period goal. The puck was shot at the corner of the net but Nolan stuck his skate against the post to make the save but Bedard kept poking and moved Nolan's skate putting the puck in the net. At 2:18 the Gens added to their lead when Schaafsma got Russo to go down to the ice with a pretty deke and shot the puck between the post and Russo's body.
John Ronan increased the lead with a power play score with a scramble goal in front of the net, with multiple Generals in front of Russo; Ronan found the puck and poked it in. Two and one half minutes later, Smolinski got a score of his own on a two on one with Tuzzolino skating down the right side and took with a light flick of the wrist took the shot beating Russo high stick side and a goal he wished he could have back.
Daniel Tetrault score Port Huron's second goal on the power play from Nick Lindberg and Tab Lardner at the 16:20 mark. Matt Moffat scored the sixth and final goal for the G-Men at 17:38 when a shot hit the far post and bounced into the middle of the net behind the netminder. But with one second remaining, Bedard scored his second of the night.
Flint went 2 of 6 with the man advantage while giving up 8 power play opportunities to the Hawks. Nolan stopped 41 of 44 shots faced through 59:57 minutes in net.
The Generals head down to Dayton to take on the Gems for a 7:30 contest. Flint came out with the victory on their last visit and look for a repeat. They return to Perani Sunday for an afternoon game with Quad City and the return of fan favorite Teddy Bear Toss.
