Icehawks' Six Game Winning Streak Comes To An End In Flint

FLINT, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks six game winning streak came to end with a 6-3 loss to the Flint Generals Friday night at Perani Arena. With Flint leading 2-0 going into the final period, the teams combined for seven goals and nine minor penalties in the final twenty minutes.

Mickael Bedard scored the first of his two goals in the third period at 1:54 off a wrap-around play assisted by Pete Rouleau. The Generals responded 24 seconds later on a breakaway goal by Jamie Schaafsma. Brandon Gentile and Tony Tuzzolino assisted. John Ronan scored on the power play to extend Flint's lead to 4-1 at 4:07. Schaafsma and Bryan Smolinski had assists.

Smolinski then scored at 6:37 from Jake Pence and Ben Boudreau to make the score 5-1. Port Huron's Daniel Tetrault connected on a power play at 16:20 from Nick Lindberg and Tab Lardner but the Generals answered 78 seconds later on a goal from Matt Moffat. Bedard finished off the scoring with another wrap-around goal with less than a second remaining in the game to make the final score 6-3 for Flint. Shots were tied 14-14 in the period.

Alec Kirschner opened the scoring just 31 seconds into the game, when he beat Icehawks goalie Adam Russo over the shoulder with a high wrist shot. Jamie Schaafsma had the only assist on the play. Flint outshot Port Huron 9-8 in the period. The Icehawks Jason Kostadine and Flint's Armando Scarlato each picked up fighting majors at 19:46 of the frame.

The Generals extended their lead in the second, despite being heavily outscored. Jake Pence scored on a Flint power play at 16:53 with assists to Tony Tuzzolino and Kirschner. Port Huron outshot Flint 22-4 in the period, but Generals goalie Rob Nolan made several big saves to keep his team in front. Port Huron outshot the Generals 44-27 overall and Nolan made 43 saves to earn the first star of the game.

The Icehawks (17-7-0-1) fall to second place in the International Hockey League standings with 35 points, two points behind the first place Muskegon Lumberjacks.
