Generals to play in Lincoln
August 31, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Lincoln Thunder News Release
Lincoln, NE. After weeks of negotiations, ABA pro basketball is back in the capital city. Michael Jefferson, owner and CEO of J & J Sports and Entertainment Group, Inc., has announced that he is bringing his team to Lincoln to play instead of Omaha. The decision comes on the heals of the recent announcement that the Lincoln Generals, formerly of the fledgling All American Professional Basketball League, were shutting its doors. The ABA team has changed its name to the Lincoln Thunder and will play a 36-game schedule which includes 18 home games to be played at the Pershing Center in Lincoln.
Instrumental in making the transition and keeping professional basketball in Lincoln is Matt Starr, General Manager. Starr, who was originally hired to head the Generals, liked the idea of joining the exciting American Basketball Association. "We are all very excited to be a part of the ABA in the city of Lincoln and we are confident that we'll have the full support of the community," said Starr. "Our number one goal is to bring a quality product to town that fans of all ages can enjoy."
Joining Starr in the front office is Justin Everitt, Asst. GM. Similar to Starr, Everitt had been with the Generals since its inception back in February. The Thunder are scheduled to open the season November 18th against the Indy Alley Cats at 7pm at Pershing Center. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
