Lincoln Thunder rolls over Husker alumni

September 29, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Lincoln Thunder News Release

Lincoln, NE. The ABA Lincoln Thunder professional basketball team exploded on the scene by defeating the Nebraska Husker Alumni Team 117-76 in the first game in team history at the Pershing Center in Lincoln. Portions of the proceeds were given to the American Red Cross raising money for the Hurricane Katrina relief fund.

Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter as they tried to work out the off-season rust. The Huskers, comprised of alumni players from the late 1980's to 2005, battled the Thunder throughout the first half in an up-tempo physical, classic ABA style. The Thunder took full advantage of the league's exciting 3-D rule by pressuring the Huskers full court causing numerous turnovers.

As a result of these turnovers, the Thunder grabbed its biggest lead of the first half, 41-33 with 3:17 remaining in the second quarter. The Huskers promptly used a 10-0 run and took their first and only lead of the game before the Thunder tied it at 45-45 going into half time. Pacing the Thunder in the first half was former Creighton Bluejay, Kellen Milliner, scoring 13 of his game high 28 points.

Halfway through the third quarter, the Thunder went on a 29-3 run going up 81-58 with 1:43 left in the third quarter thanks partly to back to back three pointers by Milliner and two thundering dunks by Danai "Ice" Young and former Husker standout Brennon Clemmons. From there the Thunder rolled to its first win in team history over an outmatched Husker Alumni team. Leading the way for the Thunder were Milliner with 28 points, Arthur Boults with 19, Young 13, and Brandon Thomas 13. Pacing the way for the Huskers were Wilson Thomas and Kendrick Ford with 15 points each. The fans got to see a great game; the victims of Hurricane Katrina were also helped.
