Odenton, MD - The Black Bears' playoff hopes took a big hit Friday night, as Maryland dropped its tenth straight contest in a 4-1 loss to the Northeast Generals. The Generals hold the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division, and with the win increases its lead over Maryland to 13 points.
Northeast struck first on the power play, with Clark Kerner taping a rebound past Black Bears' goalie David Tomeo to make it 1-0. Kerner struck again later in the period, letting a wrist shot go right off the face off into the top left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
Maryland started the second period with some chances, but it was the Generals who cashed in first. Louis Boudon put a shot five hole on Tomeo to make it 3-0, before tipping another shot into the net in the final minute to increase the Northeast lead to 4-0.
Nick Grimaldi was able to cut the deficit to 4-1 for Maryland in the third, as he weaved through a few Generals players and threw a puck on goal that found its was in through the five hole of Northeast goalie David Fessenden. The Black Bears got some chances at the end, but couldn't find the back of the net and the game ended with a 4-1 score. David Tomeo made 25 saves in the loss for Maryland while David Fessenden made 15 saves for the win for the Generals.
With seven games left for the Black Bears, and 14 total points left up for grabs, Maryland faces playoff elimination Saturday, March 9th in the rematch between these two teams. Puck drop is 7:45 PM ET at Piney Orchard Ice Arena.
