Flint Generals News Release
PORT HURON, MI - Great beginnings lately for the Flint Generals have usually equaled victories, but that wasn't he case last night as the Port Huron Icehawks erased an early 2-1 first period deficit and went on to an 8-2 victory.
Despite the loss the Generals didn't lose any ground on the third place position in the International Hockey League Turner Cup Playoff fight as the Muskegon Fury were beaten by the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. The difference in the game was goaltending as Larry Sterling made some outstanding saves after giving up two early goals. He turned aside 30 of 32 shots kept his team in the game early when it appeared the Generals had the momentum.
It was a great start to the game for the Generals as they raced out to a 1-0 lead when Mike Alexiou's wrist shot found the mark at 1:03. After Port Huron tied the game up on the powerplay, the Gens retook the lead when Jordan Fox tipped home a shot from Shaun Fisher and John DiPace. The Icehawks would take a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes with two goals including one via the power play and another with just 21 seconds remaining in the first.
The Generals were missing defensemen Kris Mallette and Brock Wilson in the contest. Mallette recovering from an elbow infection and Wilson was called up to the Albany River Rats of the AHL. The second period wasn't a good one for the Gens as they surrendered two more goals on good shots from inside the blue line to make it 5-2. Forwards Justin DePretis and Michel Beausoleil were denied scoring chances when they were stopped by goaltender Larry Sterling.
