
Generals Drop Season Finale to Suns on Monday

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. (SEPTEMBER 5, 2011) - The Generals dropped the final game of the season on Monday afternoon to the Suns, in Jacksonville, 8-4. The Suns won the final series, taking three of five from Jackson and snapping the Generals two-game win streak. The Generals finished the regular season with a record of 68-72.
Vinnie Catricala was 1-for-4 and ended the season on a 10-game hitting streak. Catricala batted .349 this season, with 48 doubles, 25 home runs and 106 RBI combined between High Desert and Jackson. Rich Poythress was 2-for-3 with a home runs and three RBI. Francisco Martinez finished 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Graham Taylor (3-5) won for Jacksonville and surrendered just two runs and six hits over five innings. Taylor was making his first start since July 29th. Jackson starter Yoervis Medina (0-1) suffered the loss and gave up six runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Suns touched the scoreboard first scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jim Negrych brought in Paul Gran with an RBI double and Kyle Skipworth plated Negrych on a RB single. The Suns led 2-0.
The Generals and Suns traded solo homers in the second inning. Rich Poythress hit his 11th home run of the season in the top of the second and Paul Gran hit his 6th of the year for Jacksonville in the bottom of the second. Jacksonville led 3-1 after two complete.
Vinnie Catricala scored on a sacrifice from Poythress in the top of the fourth that trimmed the lead to 3-2, but Jacksonville sent two more across in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-2.
Each team scored in the sixth inning including another RBI from Poythress, this time on a single. The Generals trailed 6-3 after six innings.
Jackson trimmed the lead to 6-4 in the eighth on an RBI single by Martinez. The Suns scored two runs in the bottom half on a 2-run home run by Ryan Curry to extend their lead and win, 8-4.
The Generals will open the 2012 season at Pringles Park on Thursday, April 5 against the Birmingham Barons. The pitching matchup is to be determined.
