Generals decide to disassociate from the ABA

December 29, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Virginia Ballerz News Release

RICHMOND -- Unfortunately, after long thought, the Richmond Generals have decided to disassociate from the American Basketball Association, and withdraw from continued play for the 2005-2006 season. This decision comes after various circumstances involving the league which has brought us to the conclusion that it is no longer beneficial for us or the City of Richmond to continue its involvement in this association.

We want to thank all those who supported us from our inception, and who have continued to support us until this very moment. We hope that the opportunity will again arise very soon, that will enable us to serve you once again. We understand that there are those that will be critical about our decision to terminate operations prematurely, but we can only hope that you may understand that our decision was based on factors beyond our control.

We would like to thank everyone who gave there time and support to us during our brief stay. We especially would like to thank the City for allowing us to be a part of the community, though our time was short. We would also like to thank all of the players and Coach Newman for agreeing to help us develop a winning team, as we understand neither the players nor Coach Newman had to do so. Coach Newman was extremely successful in the games played, and we are confident that he will soon be provided another opportunity to showcase his tremendous coaching abilities. Finally, we would like to thank Tim and the Siegel Center for being extremely gracious, and allowing us to house our home games in their facility.

Very Truly Yours,

Richmond Generals

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
