March 18, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release

Tonight, the Oshawa Generals hosted the Sudbury Wolves in their last game of the regular season. The Generals were going for the season series shutout (3-0-0-0 record) and were looking to wrap up the 2017-18 season on a winning note as they head into the playoffs.

1st Period:

The Generals came out on the attack early and generated some sustained zone time which led to their first opportunity on the powerplay. The PP unit created some good looks on Frappier but was ultimately unsuccessful as they searched for the opening goal of the game. Partway through the period, the Wolves began to push back and find some zone time of their own but Ceci came up big with a few key saves. Ceci continued to stand tall as the Wolves had an excellent chance during an extended 5-on-3 powerplay to open the scoring. Both Ceci and the PK unit battled to limit the time and space of the Wolves which led to a successful penalty kill. Midway through the period, Allan McShane deked around Frappier for his 20th goal of the season to give the home team a 1-0 lead. With an assist on the goal, Joseph Rupoli recorded his first career OHL point. At 5:48 of the period, Sudbury scored to tie the game 1-1. The Gens were buzzing late in the period when Antropov rang a shot off the crossbar as they looked to regain the lead. At the end of one, the game remained tied 1-1 with Sudbury holding the edge in shots 15-12.

2nd Period:

The Wolves came out aggressive to open the second as they continued to challenge Ceci but the goaltender was up to the test as he held firm with a couple stellar saves. However, at 13:05 of the period Shane Bulitka was alone in front and snapped a shot passed Ceci to put Sudbury up 2-1. On a delayed Wolves penalty, the Gens battled in front when Mitchell Hewitson tapped in his first career OHL goal to tie the game 2-2. After the goal, the Gennies continued to put on the pressure which resulted in another chance on the man advantage. At the tail end of the powerplay, McShane ripped a shot off the crossbar as the Gens worked to take the lead. Minutes later on another Gens powerplay, Domenico Commisso ripped a laser shot passed Frappier for his 23rd goal of the season to put the good guys up 3-2. Soon after, in an incredible end to end rush Eric Henderson sniped his 7th goal of the season to give the Gens a 4-2 lead. With that goal, Henderson tallied his 100th career OHL point. In the final minute of the period, Krastenbergs nearly extended the Gens lead on a breakaway rush if not for a timely save from McGrath who came in relief of Frappier. At the end of two, Oshawa led 4-2 while Sudbury held the edge in shots 25-24.

3rd Period:

Krastenbergs picked up where he left off in the second, using his speed to create another breakaway rush but was once again denied by McGrath. In a sequence of sustained pressure, Cole Resnick nearly had his first goal when he wired a shot off the crossbar and out. The Generals did not sit back with a two-goal lead as they continued to test McGrath. Midway through the period, tempers flared at centre ice in a heated scrum which resulted in a powerplay opportunity for the home team. Although the Gens did not score, they spent the majority of the time in the offensive zone as they looked to work the clock in the late stages of the period. With the Wolves pushing late in the period, Ceci was strong making several key saves to maintain the two-goal lead. In the end, the Oshawa Generals claimed victory by the final score of 4-2 to close out the 2017-18 season on a high note. Final shots were Oshawa 35 Sudbury 41.
