Elmira Jackals News Release
Flint, MI - The Flint Generals scored four power play goals on their way to a 6-3 victory over the Elmira Jackals Saturday night at Perani's Arena.
Flint got off to a flying start as they looked to pick up their first win in 5 games against the Jackals. The Generals killed off an early Elmira power play and then saw the Jackals get called for four-straight penalties. Defenseman Gerard Miller blasted in a slap shot on a 5-on-3 power play at 6:55 of the first period, assisted by Bobby Reynolds and Terry Marchant for a 1-0 lead. Miller then doubled Flint's advantage with his second power play goal of the game, scored at 9:41 on a wrist shot, his 8th goal of the year, assisted again by Reynolds and Marchant. But the Jackals pulled one back as Yevgeny Lazarev, playing through an injury suffered Friday in Port Huron, weaved his way right through the Flint defense for an unassisted power play goal at 18:41. The goal was Lazarev's 2nd goal in as many games and his 12th of the season.
Flint continued to have success on the power play in the second period. Dion Hyman collected a rebound from a Tony Tuzzolino shot that rang off the post and tapped the puck into an open net at 1:02 for another power play goal. Tuzzolino then added Flint's 4th power play goal of the game at 12:18 of the period, scoring on a wrist shot from the right face off circle and extending the Generals lead to three.
In the third period, Terry Marchant gave Flint a 5-1 lead when he scored the Generals only even strength goal of the game at 2:42. But the Jackals came back as captain Brent Cullaton scored a power play goal at 13:15, assisted by Frank Littlejohn. Cullaton then set up rookie forward Dan Veenema for an even-strength goal at 18:03, cutting the Flint lead to 5-3. The goal was Veenema's first career professional goal and his second pro point; he had an assist Friday in Port Huron. The Jackals pulled goaltender Kris Tebbs in an attempt to claw back from the two-goal deficit in the final 90 seconds of the game, but Jason Selleke capped off the scoring with an empty net goal at 19:31 and a 6-3 Flint win.
Bryan Worosz earned the win in goal for Flint by stopping 30-of-33 shots as the Generals improved to 12-14-2 on the season, now tied for 3rd place in the Eastern Conference with the Jackals. Elmira's goalie Kris Tebbs made 27 saves on 32 shots as Elmira lost their fourth straight game, falling to 13-2-0 on the year. Flint was 4-for-8 on the power play; while Elmira was 2-for-9.
The Jackals finish off their weekend road trip Sunday afternoon against the defending Colonial Cup Champion Kalamazoo Wings for the first time since the opening weekend of the season. The Jackals return to First Arena on Friday, December 29th as they host the Port Huron Flags at 7:35 pm.
