Generals Begin Road Trip with Victory over Battalion

Calum Ritchie scored on the powerplay with 43 seconds remaining in the third period to give the Oshawa Generals a 3-2 victory over the North Bay Battalion.

Ryan Stepien recorded a goal and two assists, while goaltender Patrick Leaver made a staggering 44 saves to help the Generals start their road trip out on the right foot. Captain Ty Tullio also recorded an assist, extending his point-scoring streak to nine games to begin the season.

This is the first of four matchups this season between these two clubs. The Generals have dominated the Battalion in recent memory, going 12-2-1-1 in the past five seasons.

Stepien got the only goal in the first period with just 28 seconds remaining on the clock. It was his seventh of the season, which put him momentarily in the team lead for goals on the season.

In the second period, it was all North Bay, as they piled shots on Leaver for 20 minutes, looking dangerous on numerous occasions. The Battalion totalled 23 shots in the period, and Leaver was able to fight off each one to keep North Bay scoreless through 40.

Brett Harrison was able to extend the Generals lead to 2-0 before the end of the second with a goal on the powerplay for this fourth of the season.

The third period was once again drama-filled for the Oshawa Generals. On Sunday night's game against the Ottawa 67's, they saw their lead evaporate within five minutes. On this night, thanks to goals by Dalyn Wakely and Mitchell Russel, the Battalion stormed back to tie the game 2-2 with under 10 minutes left to play.

However, this time around, Oshawa wasn't going to allow this to rattle them at all. They battled hard and were given a powerplay in the final minutes of the game.

Off a beautiful pass from Harrison, it was Calum Ritchie who finds open space right in the slow and snipes one home to give the Generals a lead late in the third. The goal was Ritchie's seventh of the season, putting him right back in a tie with Stepien for the team lead.

North Bay pushed hard in the game's final seconds, but the Generals would hold on and take the game by a score of 3-2.

"Our players responded great to North Bay tying the game in the third," said head coach Todd Miller after the game. "I was really, really proud of every single player on that bench."

The win moves the Oshawa Generals to 4-3-0-2 on the season. They will be back in action Friday night in Sudbury to take on the Wolves, a game Miller says his team will be ready for.

"We had a plan in place to go get the first one on this road trip. Mission accomplished, and now we are ready to go get another win tomorrow."
