Klamath Falls Gems News Release
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore - The Klamath Falls Gems hosted the Portland Stars on Saturday night and hit the ball well, winning 11-2. A crowd of 892 braved a cloudy night at Kiger Stadium to watch the Gems pound the Stars in the first of two non-league games.
The Gems came out swinging and their bats were alive and strong. Graham Saiko (Oklahoma St) led off the game for the Gems with a double. Nate Goodwin (Baylor) scored Saiko with a single to right field. Later in the inning, Kainoa Crowell (Ohlone JC) doubled down the right field line, scoring Tom D'Aboy (Gonzaga) from second base, as D'Aboy walked earlier in the inning.
In the second inning the Gems put up five runs. Zach Earle (Oregon Tech) and Saiko walked back to back to start the inning. Goodwin followed with an RBI single, scoring Earle. Rich Sanguinetti (U of Nebraska) then knocked in Saiko with a single. D'Aboy also singled, then scored after a Bo Cornish (U. of Portland) single.
Starting pitcher for the Gems, Nick Miller (Nebraska) picked up the win after pitching five full innings. Miller gave up two hits and only walked one, and struck out four Stars. Josh Farrell (College of the Desert) came in to start the sixth inning and only gave up one run and three hits, while only walking one, as he finished the game.
Tomorrow the Gems will play their first and only day game of the season starting at 1:05 p.m. against the same Portland Stars.
