Elks Win Series, Beat Sweets 3-2

July 31, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Elks opened what is likely prove to be a critical three game series against the Corvallis Knights on Saturday night, and Game 1 took 15 innings before Michael Benjamin's RBI single put the Elks ahead for good as Bend beat the Corvallis Knights by a score of 4-3.

The Elks got on the board first in the top of the first as Stetson Olson drew a one out single, Tyler Christian walked, then Ryan Dunn and Jordan Brower hit back to back RBI singles, making the score 2-0 in the early going.

The Knights answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first as a hit by pitch and a double put runners on second and third, allowing Ryan Gorton to come up and deliver a two run single, tying the game at 2. Corvallis then took a one run lead in the bottom of the fourth as Jimmy Allen reached on a one out error and Matt Nylen hit a 2 out double to help the Knights gain the lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Elks broke out of their lull as Michael Benjamin hit a 0-1 solo home run to tie the game up at three.

That would be all of the scoring until the top of the 15th inning, where Toby DeMello got a lead-off double, Corvallis intentionally walks Stetson Olson, and Michael Benjamin delivers an RBI single to score DeMello, giving the final 4-3 mark.

The Elks and Knights will play Game 2 tomorrow, first pitch at 6:35.

Elks lose Game 1 by a score of 12-3

The Elks Split Squad dropped game 1 of the double header largely due to issues on the mound as they gave up 13 hits and issued 11 walks to the Portland Pirates, and would drop Game 1 by a score of 12-3.

Game 2 would be a much better game overall, but still ended in defeat for the Elks, as they were simply beat in the late game, as three errors were committed in bad spots and ultimately would lead to their second loss on the day.
