
Gems Outlast Sundogs 3-2 in Shootout Saturday Night

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Gems would outlast the Arizona Sundogs in a physical 3-2 shootout win on Saturday night inside the historic Hara Arena. Scoring for the Gems were Nick Fanto and Jon Ornelas (including the game winner in the shootout).
The shootout lasted for 16 attempts between the teams. Arizona got shootout goals from Kyle Hood and Olivier Proulx. Dayton's other shootout goals were scored by Tim Hartung and David Nimmo.
The Gems were sparked by Nick Fanto, who finished with one goal and one assist. Fanto scored on the power play 19:31 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Dayton. Dayton had gotten the advantage when the Sundogs' Proulx was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. Greg Labenski picked up the assist.
Dayton additionally got points from Fanto, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Dayton received assists from rookie netminder Dan Dunn, who had one.
Arizona's offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 31 shots per game it averages.
The Sundogs were helped by Tyler Butler, who grabbed one goal. Butler scored on the power play 4:41 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Arizona. A boarding penalty on Dustin DeGagne had put Arizona on the power play. Jean-Philipp Chabot also scored for Arizona. More assists for Arizona came via Jesse Perrin, who had one.
Jonathan Ornelas netted the deciding goal for the Dayton Gems in the shootout as Gems prevailed over the Arizona Sundogs, 3-2.
Dunn turned away 37 pucks between the pipes for the Gems. Dayton incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Sundogs' Scott Reid stopped 26 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Arizona incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
With the shootout win, the Gems improve their record to 18-25-10 and snap a brief one game winless streak in the process.
The Gems return to action on Cassano's Italian Ice inside Hara Arena on Sunday afternoon to close out the three game weekend homestand against the Evansville IceMen at 4pm.
