DAYTON, OH - JP Chabot knotted things up for the Arizona Sundogs early in the third period, but Jonathan Ornelas was credited with the game-winner as the Dayton Gems earned a 3-2 win on Saturday night at Hara Arena after an eight-round shootout.
Tim Hartung and David Nimmo also scored in the shootout for the Gems (18-25-10). Kyle Hood and Olivier Proulx scored for Arizona (16-28-9). It was the second straight game Arizona was bested in a shootout.
Chabot's tying goal came just 1:24 into the third as he deflected Jesse Perrin's point shot for his 19th of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Tyler Butler opened up the scoring with a Sundogs power play goal at 4:41 of period two. Butler's slap shot from the left point was his 10th goal of the season and the 99th of his pro career. Dayton responded at 7:21 as Jonathan Ornelas buried a rebound in front of the net and Nick Fanto's wrist shot from the left circle with 28 seconds to play gave the Gems a 2-1 lead.
Arizona and Dayton both finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
Scott Reid turned in another strong performance with 26 saves. Dan Dunn earned the win for Dayton, stopping 37.
The Sundogs now return home for four games in a five-night stretch. The team begins a two-game set against Rapid City on Tuesday at Tim's Toyota Center. Game time is set for 7:05 PM MST and the action can be heard live on Cattle Country 94.3 FM.
