Gems Lose to Corvallis

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Six hundred and nineteen Gems fans came to watch the Tuesday night game between the Klamath Falls Gems and the Corvallis Knights. What they saw turned into a track meet. The Knights stepped off the bus running and stole the game from the Gems, 13-2, at Kiger Stadium.

The first-place Knights picked up six runs in the third inning and never looked back as they smashed the Gems. The Knights had seven stolen bases in the third inning, along with and four hits, to bring in the six runs. With the bases loaded, David Armendariz (Cal Poly) and Ryan Gorton (Oregon St) stole home on consecutive pitches from Gems pitcher Bryan Clough (Cal Irvine) Gems. Chase Johnson (Cal Poly) moved to 2-1, 2.15 as he held down the Gems after pitching five innings, striking out three, and only giving up three hits and two walks.

For Corvallis, Cory Davis (Wright State) ended up 2-3 on the night. Davis also hit a solo homerun to left center. David Andriese (UC Riverside) pinch hit in the seventh inning and hit his own solo homerun. For the Gems, Graham Saiko (Oklahoma St) singled in the third and seventh inning continuing his hitting streak to four games. Rich Sanguinetti (U. Nebraska) had a ninth inning double that scored the only two runs for the Gems.

The Gems will play the final two games of the series against Corvallis the Wednesday and Thursday. The Bend Elks come back to Kiger Stadium for the Gems final three home games of the season the August 5-7th.

The Gems are members of the West Coast League, a nine-team professional style wood-bat summer college league. The WCL features pro prospects from major conferences across the country. More than 100 WCL alums are playing affiliated professional baseball this season, and 11 ex-WCL stars have played in the Major Leagues this season.
