Bend Elks News Release

The Elks got back to their winning ways on Tuesday in front of 3,016 Elks Fans, beating the Sweets 8-1

The Elks responded to their sluggish night on Monday in a big way on Tuesday, banging out 8 runs on 15 hits against the Walla Walla Sweets in front of a full house of Elks fans on Tuesday night, the largest crowd of the 2011 season, and the Elks beat the Sweets by a score of 8-1.

The Elks got on the board in the bottom of the first as Stetson Olson reached with one out, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Tyler Christian, giving the Elks a 1-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the third, Donald Collins walked and Olson had a 3-1 count when Walla Walla starter Trent Allianic left the game with an injury, requiring an emergency reliever to enter the game. Doug Christie came on and walked Olson, then Michael Benjamin took a 2-1 fastball and put it over the left field wall for a 3 run home run to extend the lead 4-0.

The Sweets pushed one across one in the top of the sixth off of Stephen Ostapeck (5-3 ), who threw 7quality innings in earning the win, giving up 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 5. Kevin Hawk led off the inning with a double and would come around to score on a fly ball that was mishandled by Donald Collins, cutting the lead to 4-1.

The Elks got one back in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Eric Yardley as Olson and Michael Benjamin had back to back singles to lead off the inning, then Jordan Brower grounded into a double play, but Olson would score, making it 5-1.

Then in the 8th, Ryan Dunn led off the inning with a solo home run, his 1st of the summer, to make it 6-1. That was followed by three consecutive singles, the third being an RBI single by Donald Collins. Olson followed with a sac fly for an RBI to end the scoring, giving the final 8-1 mark. Daniel Grazzini threw a scoreless 9th to secure the victory for the Elks (28-21), who extended their lead to a game and a half over the Cowlitz Black Bears, who are off until Friday.

The Elks return to action tomorrow for game 2 against the Sweets, 6:35 first pitch.
