Kelowna Falcons Earn Comeback Win

August 3, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Kelowna Falcons News Release

With just six outs to go the Kelowna Falcons stormed back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the league leading Wenatchee Applesox 5-4 on Tuesday night to begin their final road series of the summer.

Tuesday night marked the second series in Wenatchee this summer. In the first series the Falcons didn't score a run over the three games. A trend that appeared would continue on Tuesday night...until the eighth inning.

The Sox would jump out to a 1-0 lead in their first at bat off Falcons' starter Ryan Paterson. They would add two more in the third and a single tally in the fifth to take a commanding 4-0 lead. It appeared that would be all the scoring Sox starter Scott Simon would need. In his second start against the Falcons this summer, he would throw seven shutout innings, scattering seven hits and striking out six.

In the eighth the Falcons would get to the Sox bullpen scoring twice on four hits cutting the lead in half. Greg Freisen would hit his fifth double of the year and add to his team leading RBI total which stands at 17 after three on Tuesday night. Nick Colwell and Bo Folkinga would score after leading off the inning with hits.

Then in the ninth newcomer Brandon Lee and Jeff Melby would lead off the inning with singles to start the rally for the Falcons. After the Sox would get the next two batters, Folkinga singled to load the bases for Freisen. He would single to bring home Dillon Bryant (running for Lee) to reload the bases for Kyle Pearson. The big rightly would single on the first pitch to score Melby and Folkinga with the go ahead run. They would hold on for their 14th win of the year.

What was lost in the offensive explosion was the job of reliever Luke West. He would enter the ball game in the fifth and completely shut-down the best offensive in the WCL. West would throw five shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out four. He would record his second win of the summer, and second win in three nights.

Victor Rasor-Thompson, Folkinga, Friesen, Pearson and Lee would have multi-hit games.

The Falcons beat the Sox for the first time this year and outhit them 16-7 and gained a game on the Bellingham Bells and Walla Walla Sweets who both lost on Tuesday night. The Falcons find themselves six games back of the final playoff spot with eight to play....three of the eight games are against the Bells to conclude the regular season.

The Falcons will return home on Friday night to begin their final home stand of the year. They'll host the Kitsap Bluejackets on the weekend, and then welcome the Bells.
