Dayton Gems News Release
DAYTON, OH - The Dayton Gems saw their winning streak end at two games on Sunday night. Mike Kinnie's goal early in the third period gave the Port Huron Icehawks a 3-2 victory over the Gems at Hara Arena. It was the final game of the Gems homestand that started with wins over the Muskegon Lumberjacks and the Flint Generals.
The Gems rallied from two one goal deficits during the contest but couldn't come all the way back in the final period. Goaltender Derek MacIntyre was solid in net despite taking the loss. He was pulled in the final 90 seconds of the third period in hopes of scoring the equalizer. Dayton swarmed the net and let a shot go in the final seconds but failed to net one.
In the second period the Gems tied the game up when Matt Auffrey scored on a feed from Dan Lapointe at 5;31. The two teamed up on a great play up the ice. However, it didn't take long for Port Huron to regain the momentum as they scored on a power play 66 seconds later.
Dayton pulled even in the final two minutes of the second on an innocent wrist shot from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn that hit the crossbar and went in behind Russo. The Gems could have easily had the lead on a couple of occasions but failed to score on an extended 5 on 3.
It was a slow start for the Gems as they managed just four shots on goal and surrendered the first goal of the game when Jamie Lovell connected even strength.
The Gems were outshot by Port Huron 36-35 even though they did enjoy a decisive 19-9 advantage in the second period. There were a total of 10 power plays in the contest with Port Huron netting the lone marker.
The Dayton Gems return to action this Wednesday when they visit the Flint Generals for the first time at Perani Arena and Event Center at 7 pm. Fans can tune into the game live at www.daytongems.com beginning with the Gems Pre-Game Show at 6:50 pm with Denis J. Puska. Don't miss the John Marks coaching insider during that pre-game show.
Hockey returns to Hara Arena on Sunday, Nov. 22 when the Gems entertain the Flint Generals at 5 pm. Tickets are available at the Box Office or on line at www.ticketmaster.com. Fans are encouraged to take advantage of the new single game ticket prices.
