Gems Fall To Bloomington 5-3

BLOOMINGTON, ILL - The Bloomington Prairie Thunder appear to have the Dayton Gems number this season. The Prairie Thunder beat the Gems for the third straight game, this time 5-3 on Friday at US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Illinois.

The Gems record fell to 5-6-2-0, while the Prairie Thunder remained in first place in the International Hockey League standings with a record of 8-3-0-1. It was a wild third period of play and at one point, the Gems had tied the game at 2-2, but three goals less than four minutes apart powered Bloomington to the lead that they would never relinquish.

Early in the third period, Danny Lapointe scored for Dayton just twenty seconds into the stanza from Matt Auffrey and Michael Mullen. Bloomington retook the lead on a scramble in front of the net just four minutes later and then scored twice 11 seconds apart. Dayton rounded out the scoring when Joe Van Culin found the back of the net at the 10:39 on the power play. It was a tough start to the game for the Gems as they fell behind 2-0 in the opening period. Bloomington fired a couple of power play goals including one just 1:16 into the game. Bloomington outshot Dayton 9-6 in the first period.

The second period started better for the Gems and they finally got on the board when John Snowden tallied on the power play from Michael Mullen and Matt Auffrey at 9:55. The Prairie Thunder outshot the Gems 9-7 through 40 minutes of play.

Bloomington outshot the Gems 32-23. There were a total of 11 power plays which each team scoring twice.

Dayton returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) night when they visit the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30 pm.
