Gaustad helps PrairieThunder win in shootout over Chicago

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - B.J. Gaustad scored his second game-winning goal of the season as the Bloomington PrairieThunder handed the Chicago Hounds a 4-3 defeat in a shootout Wednesday night before 2,772 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in United Hockey League action.

Gaustad, the last of five shooters in the shootout, helped the PrairieThunder improve its record to 17-35-2. The victory moved the PrairieThunder's shootout record to 5-2, while Chicago is winless in four shootouts.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Matt Johnson off an assist from Mike Kautz at the 5:20 mark. Bloomington tied the game eight minutes later on an Alex Goupil power play goal off assists from Jon Booras and Jarad Bourassa.

Bloomington took a 2-1 advantage with 10:03 remaining in the second period on a goal by Tyler Rennette with assists going to Greg Koehler and Brad Thompson. Chicago's Matt Amando tied the game with 3:20 left in the second period with a goal assisted by Rod Aldoff and Josh Elzinga.

John Spoltore gave the PrairieThunder a 3-2 lead with 13:10 remaining in the third period on an unassisted power play goal. The Hounds sent the game into the shootout when Johnson scored again with 26 seconds remaining off assists from Darryl McArthur and Chris Busby.

Jeff Reynaert was the winning goalie for Bloomington after he replaced Steffan Braunlich midway through the second period after Braunlich suffered a groin injury. Braunlich made 15 saves on 16 shots and Reynaert saved 23 of 25 shots.

The PrairieThunder, which shutout Chicago on seven power play possessions, returns to action Friday at Chicago in a 7:30 p.m. Western Conference game. Bloomington is home Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. contest against Kalamazoo and Sunday in a 3:05 p.m. tilt against Quad City.
