Louisiana IceGators News Release

LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (7-28) were at home Friday night to take on the Columbus Cottonmouths (14-16). The Cottonmouths entered the game with the IceGators coming off a big victory against the Ice Flyers of Pensacola. But the 'Gators entered on a 17-game losing streak. The IceGators had the lead in the final period but came up just a little short again, losing to the Cottonmouths 5-4. During the losing the streak, the 'Gators have lost eleven games by two goals or less.

The IceGators opened the game by trading shots on goal with the Cottonmouths but none of them were able to get past either goalie. The Cottonmouths were the first to strike in the period though. Daryl Moore (COL) scored his 12th goal of the season and put Columbus up 1-0.

The second period started with Brad Townsend (LOU) and Matt Kinnunen (COL) getting into a fight about a minute into the period. Shortly after the fighting Moore was called for tripping and that put the 'Gators on a power play. Beau McLaughlin (LOU) and the 'Gators capitalized. McLaughlin scored his 21st goal of the season and tied the game at 1-1. The tie would be short lived though. Sam Bowles (COL) scored less than a minute later. With 13:39, Levi Lind (COL) was called for tripping. Shawn McNeil (LOU) tied the game back up at 2-2, 19 seconds later with help from Paul D'Agostino (LOU) and Jason Hill (LOU). Columbus responded with a goal of their own with 9:41 remaining in the period when Bowles scored his second goal of the game. The 'Gators answered the Cottonmouth goal when Hill scored with 3:46 left in the second period.

The Third period began with the IceGators and Cottonmouths tied at 3-3. Hill put the 'Gators up, for the first time in the game, when he scored his second goal of the game less than three minutes into the final period. Following a four-minute stretch where there were no shots on goal, Jordan Braid (COL) scored the game-tying goal at the 13:31 mark. With 10:32 the 'Gators' McLaughlin was called for holding, the only penalty for the IceGators in the third period. A minute later Bret Tyler (COL) scored his second goal of the season and put Columbus up 5-4. The 'Gators were able to close out the final minute with two shots on goal but none of them were able to be pushed past Ian Vigier (COL) and Columbus held on to get the win.

"This just keeps happening to us," replied a frustrated IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after the lose to the Cottonmouths. "We have to learn to finish the game. We are just coming up a little short."

The IceGators will return to the Dome on Saturday to take on the Cottonmouths of Columbus again at 7:05.
