Stockton Ports News Release
ADELANTO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports had their second complete game thrown against them in three days on Monday night in Adelanto. This time, they were unable to pull out a victory. High Desert Mavericks starter Reed Garrett (7-4) tossed all nine innings as the Mavericks snapped the Ports four-game win streak by a final of 6-1.
Stockton's lone run of the game came in the first when it appeared they had Garrett on the ropes. Brett Vertigan opened the game with a double and Melvin Mercedes and Yairo Munoz followed with back-to-back singles, with Munoz driving in Vertigan to give the Ports a 1-0 lead. Garrett, however, would go on to retire seven batters in a row after the RBI single by Munoz.
Garrett, who allowed just three hits after the first inning, pitched around one-out doubles in the third and fourth. He also pitched around a leadoff single in the fifth and an error coupled with a walk in the seventh, going on to retire the final seven batters he faced. He earned the win, going all nine innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out four.
Ports starter Matt Stalcup (2-5) gave up the tying run in the second as he walked Cam Maron with two outs and then allowed an RBI double to Alberto Triunfel.
High Desert took the lead in the third. Evan Van Hoosier delivered a leadoff triple and scored on an ensuing single by Isiah Kiner-Falefa to make it a 2-1 game. Two batters later, Royce Belinger provided a sac-fly to center to make it 3-1.
Stalcup gave up a leadoff home run to Triunfel in the fourth and was lifted two batters later. He suffered the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Sam Roberts took over for Stalcup and gave up two runs in the fifth. With runners at the corners and one out, Maron grounded out to first to drive in the fifth High Desert run of the night. Triunfel followed and reached on a fielding error committed by the shortstop Munoz that allowed another run to score and make it a 6-1 ballgame.
Roberts allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in an inning-and-two-thirds of relief.
Trevor Bayless and Sam Bragg combined for three scoreless innings of relief for Stockton to close out the ballgame.
The Ports and Mavericks play the second game of their four-game set on Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium. Casey Meisner (1-1, 4.15 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander Trey Lambert (7-3, 4.84 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
