Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Elniery Garcia hurled seven strong innings to lead the Threshers on Thursday night, as Clearwater took the series over the Brevard County Manatees two games to one at Bright House Field.

Clearwater (37-23) remains two games back of the first-place Dunedin Blue Jays with ten games to play in the regular season.

Garcia retired the first 11 he faced on Thursday, and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts in his seven strong innings.

The Threshers jumped out in front in the first inning against Bubba Derby (6-11), when four-straight reached to start the frame. Zach Coppola walked, and Josh Tobias and Carlos Tocci followed with singles to load the bases.

Aaron Brown then chopped a 2-0 pitch over the head of first baseman Mitch Ghelfi for a base hit, scoring both Coppola and Tobias to give Clearwater the early lead.

Brevard County (15-45) cut the deficit in half on its first hit of the ballgame in the fourth. With two outs, Blake Allemand lined a solo homer out to left to make it 2-1.

That score held into the sixth.

Derby hit a groove and retired 13 straight, before Brown drew a two-out walk. Martin then lashed a double off the wall in left to score Brown with Clearwater's third run, on Martin's 77th RBI of the season.

Jiandido Tromp followed by launching a two-run home run to the stands in left for his eighth long ball in a Threshers uniform, and 18th home run total between Clearwater and Lakewood this season. Tromp's bomb boosted Clearwater to a 5-1 lead.

Garcia exited after seven innings, having permitted two runs on just three hits and a walk while striking out seven on 83 pitches. The bullpen took it the rest of the way, with Austin Davis working a perfect eighth and Ulises Joaquin tossing a scoreless ninth to earn his ninth save.

The Threshers hit the road for the next seven, beginning with a three-game set at Daytona. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. in the series opener on Friday as Luke Leftwich (3-3) takes the hill, and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com and the TuneIn app starting at 6:50 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
