TAMPA, Fla. - Despite 17 strikeouts by Tampa pitching, the Dunedin Blue Jays (39-21, 73-56) defeated the Yankees (32-28, 74-55) in as sloppy rubber game, 6-2 on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The game featured seven errors and six unearned runs.
A pair of fielding errors by third baseman Kevin Cornelius allowed the Blue Jays to take an early lead in the second. Jonathan Davis reached on the first error and later scored on an infield single by Matt Dean. Michael De La Cruz singled and later scored as David Harris reached on the second error.
Tampa used a pair of Dunedin errors to get on the board in the fourth. Thairo Estrada reached second on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by second baseman Dickie Joe Thon. An error by shortstop Jorge Flores placed Trey Amburgey on base. A walk by Rashad Crawford loaded the bases and, one out later, Connor Spencer walked in the first Yankee run.
The Blue Jays tallied the only earned runs of the game in the fifth. Anthony Alford walked, stole second and scored on a double by Thon. Max Pentecost followed with his own RBI double, giving Dunedin a 4-1 lead.
LHP Nestor Cortes (L, 4-2) tallied 10 strikeouts for the first time since joining Tampa. The 21-year-old retired 10-straight batters between the second and fifth innings. Cortes allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings, walking one batter and throwing 49 of 83 pitches for strikes.
De La Cruz greeted RHP Jordan Foley by reaching on an infield single to begin the sixth. De La Cruz stole second and reached third on a groundout before scoring on a wild throw back to the pitcher by catcher Jesus Aparicio.
RHP Jon Harris (W, 3-1) claimed the win for Dunedin after holding Tampa to one unearned run on four hits in five and two-third innings. Harris walked three, struck out four and threw 60 of 97 pitches for strikes.
RHP Eduardo Rivera took the hill in the eight and retired the first two batters before De La Cruz tripled into the right field corner. Dean then reached on an error by shortstop Jorge Mateo, allowing De La Cruz to score.
Tampa picked up hits second run off LHP Tim Mayza in the ninth. Devyn Bolasky reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild throw by Flores. Aparicio then doubled down the left field line, scoring Bolasky. Mayza and RHP Dusty Isaacs combined to retire the next three batters, closing out the game.
Yankee pitchers combined to tally 17 strikeouts (Cortes 10, Foley 4, Rivera 3). Crawford (2-for-3, BB) had the lone multi-hit game. Cornelius (1-for-3, BB) is now on a seven-game hitting streak.
Up next, Tampa stays home to host the Brevard County Manatees. The series begins on Friday at 12:00 p.m., with LHP Josh Rogers (9-5, 2.43 ERA) starting for the Yankees against RHP Jon Perrin (2-7, 2.38 ERA) for the Manatees.
