Gameday: Adirondack vs. South Carolina
May 5, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight's matchup is Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the South Carolina Stingrays and the Adirondack Thunder. Adirondack holds a 2-1 series lead after a 3-1 victory on Tuesday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The series remains in Upstate New York for Game 4 tonight and Game 5 on Saturday evening.
GENTLE AS A LOMB: Thunder forward Ryan Lomberg was the driving factor for Adirondack offensively in Game 3 with a goal and an assist to lead the Thunder charge. With his tally, Lomberg has now found the back of the net in all three home games to date during the 2016 postseason. The multi-point game was also the first of Lomberg's Kelly Cup Playoff career.
A GOOD APPLE: Goaltender Ken Appleby ranks near the top of the ECHL in most playoff goaltending categories, including second in wins (6), second in save percentage (.938) and third in goals against average (1.85). With a victory tonight, the former Oshawa General would tie Fort Wayne's Pat Nagle for the league lead with seven victories. Appleby is also one of four goaltenders to record a playoff shutout, courtesy of a 3-0 win in Game 5 of Round 1 in Manchester.
HEARD THAT: Forward Mitchell Heard got the scoring started for Adirondack in Game 3, as his power-play goal midway through the first sent his team into the intermission tied at one. With the tally, Heard moved into sole possession of second for the Thunder in postseason scoring with nine points (4-5-9) from eight games played. Heard is also a point-per-game player in his playoff career with 18 points (7-11-18) in 18 games.
SPECIAL, SPECIAL TEAMS: The Thunder have scored a power-play goal in six of eight playoff games, including Heard's PPG in Game 2. Adirondack has also thrived on the penalty kill, which is 13-of-14 in Round 2 thus far. Adirondack has killed off 91.9% of all opposing power plays through eight playoff games, ranking second in the ECHL behind only Fort Wayne (92.2%).
BABY NOW WE GOT BAD BLOOD: Adirondack and South Carolina combined for 54 penalty minutes in Game 3, the most that the Thunder have racked up in any game so far in the postseason. The game featured 15 total penalties, including three misconducts late in the third period. Of the playoff teams remaining, Adirondack is the second-least penalized team in the playoffs, behind only Missouri, while South Carolina led the Eastern Conference during the regular season with 1,273 PIM's.
A LOOK AHEAD: Following tonight's Game 4, the two teams will square off again on Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Game 5 will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
