Ponies Take Game 1, 4-1, On Strength of Oswalt
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies took Game One of the East Division Championship Series, 4-1, on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium on the strength of seven innings of one-run ball from Eastern League Pitcher of the Year, Corey Oswalt. Binghamton took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Oswalt surrendered a run to the Thunder in the top of the first when Thairo Estrada crossed home on a wild pitch. Estrada found himself on third base following a single by Garrett Cooper (1-for-3, BB) and Oswalt's slider got through the legs of Tomas Nido.
The Rumble Ponies answered right back in their half of the first inning when Luis Guillorme and Kevin Kaczmarski both walked against Dillon Tate to start the inning. Peter Alonso drove them in with a double to right-center and the Ponies never looked back.
Binghamton added to the lead with another two-run double in the third inning. A walk by Alonzo then a single by Kevin Taylor started the frame and Matt Oberste drove them home with a double to deep left to make it 4-1 Binghamton.
Oswalt settled in following the run support and fired seven innings to earn the victory. He struck out seven and allowed just five hits and one walk.
The Thunder kept it a 4-1 game thanks to a fantastic relief outing from Jose Mesa Jr. Mesa went five innings in relief of Dillon Tate and allowed just three baserunners and struck out five to keep the Thunder within striking distance. Thanks to Mesa's work out of the 'pen, the Thunder had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning against Tyler Bashler. Cooper led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Dante Bichette Jr. doubled to put two men in scoring position with nobody out. Bashler came back to strike out Nick Solak, Ryan McBroom and Zack Zehner consecutively to end the game.
Your Thunder continue their series on Thursday night at 6:35pm against the Rumble Ponies. RHP Brody Koerner will start for the Thunder, RHP Ricky Knapp will go for Binghamton. Game two of the series will begin on 920 AM The Jersey and online at www.trentonthunder.com/broadcast with Adam Giardino and Jon Mozes beginning at 6:20pm.
