Madison Mallards News Release

WATERLOO, IA - June 22, 2011. The Madison Mallards head back to Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo looking to finish a three-game sweep of the Bucks at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. A victory would also mark the second straight series sweep for the Mallards and would increase their winning streak to five games.

After one the biggest offensive showings in the Northwoods League this season, the Mallards have to be careful against a talented Waterloo club.

Coming into the series, the Bucks were only one-half game behind the Mallards in the standings, and are still playing well despite their recent struggles versus the Ducks.

Madison, on the other hand, has not fared so well in games after they have scored over ten runs. Prior to Tuesday night, the Mallards scored in double-digits three times already this season, but they have lost the next game in all three instances.

Hoping to snap that trend on the mound for Madison will be Cam Booser (Oregon State). Booser has not started yet for the Mallards and replaces Cash Collins (Wofford) in the third spot in Madison's rotation after Collins was waived by the team last week. Booser has appeared in one game for the Mallards and earned the save in the 5-4 extra-inning win against Wisconsin Rapids on June 19th.

In the team's three losses after scoring more then ten times, the offense has only scored a combined six runs, and was even shutout once.

Also looking to reverse that trend are the eight players hitting over .300 on the season. One of those eight is Justin Scanlon (Michigan State), who has a .393 average. Perhaps even more impressive than his average is the hitting streak Scanlon has put together. The second-year Mallards' infielder has appeared in thirteen games and has gotten a hit in all of them.

Following Tuesday's outburst, the Mallards offense now leads the Northwoods League in runs (122), hits (208), doubles (40), home runs (20), total bases (308), and on-base percentage (.393). The team is second behind only Eau Claire in batting average, hitting .296 in 20 games.

Waterloo will send Mike Wisecarver (Nicholls State) to the mound looking to salvage the series. Wisecarver is perhaps the best candidate to knock off the Mallards, as he is 1-0 on the season with a 2.70 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched. Even more important, the Bucks are 3-0 in games in which Wisecarver has made an appearance. Wisecarver pitched against the Mallards in the Bucks' 4-2 win on June 9th and went six innings, allowing two runs. He did not factor in the decision.

The Mallards will board the team bus following Wednesday's game and head back home for a 7:05 p.m. game against the La Crosse Loggers.

In the News

Willie Argo and Justin Parr, teammates at the University of Illinois, were both named as Northwoods League "Player of the Night." This marks the first time all season that the league has given the daily honor to two players.

It was a tough a choice to choose just one, as Argo went 2-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI. Parr went 5-for-6 six with three runs scored.
