April 30, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Iowa Barnstormers News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers (3-3) are set to take on the San Antonio Talons (1-6) for the second time this season on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm CDT at the Alamadome in San Antonio, TX. The game will be available live on WHO 1040 AM, and online via ESPN3 and the WatchESPN application.
The Iowa Barnstormers fell in the final moments of their Week 7 matchup against the ArenaBowl XXVI runner-up Philadelphia Soul. Iowa started on top in the back-and-forth battle versus the Soul with an interception by defensive back Ter'Ran Benton followed by a rushing touchdown by fullback Derik Steiner. However, Philadelphia was quick to respond after each Iowa touchdown. A fumble recovered by Philly resulted in back-to-back touchdowns for the Soul, allowing for the home team to pull ahead. Down by two in the fourth, an 11-yard field goal completion by K Ross Gornall put the Barnstormers back in the lead. With less than a minute left on the clock, Philadelphia didn't back down. The Soul took the victory with a 6-yard touchdown pass in the final three seconds of the game. Iowa fell short, 55-60.
Last week, Carson Coffman led a solid offensive game finishing with 306 total passing yards, one rushing touchdown, and five more in the air. Key receivers were Marco Thomas and Darius Reynolds who both tallied two touchdowns for the Iowa offense. Defensive back Jason Simpson led the Iowa defense with 6.5 total tackles.
The San Antonio Talons previous matchup was versus the ArenaBowl XXVI Champion Arizona Rattlers. Giving the Rattlers a run for their money, the Talons never allowed the Rattlers to take more than a 10-point lead. The game finished in favor of Arizona, 69-59. Shane Boyd completed 19-of-28 passes for 272 yards and six touchdowns. Boyd also accounted for one rushing touchdown and was intercepted twice. Key target, wide receiver D.J. Stephens tallied 10 catches for 155 yards and four touchdowns.
The Barnstormers and the Talons met just three weeks ago for Iowa's 2014 home opener. The contest became a close match with the Talons scoring 34 points in the fourth quarter. The Barnstormers were able to hold them off 63-62 when the clock ran out. Derik Steiner's first game as a Barnstormer, the fullback accounted for two rushing touchdowns. Coffman threw for 287 yards and seven touchdowns between key receivers M. Thomas and Reynolds.
To take the victory this weekend, the Barnstormers will need to continue a strong second half game. Taking care of the ball on both sides of the line and executing plays will be key for Iowa this week. One of the League's top receiving leaders, D.J. Stephens will have to be kept a close eye on.
The Iowa Barnstormers return home on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Season tickets remain on sale, while individual game tickets can be purchased for any regular season game at the Wells Fargo Arena Box office or by calling the Barnstormers at 515-633-2255.
