QMJHL Charlottetown Islanders

Game Preview: February 8 vs Quebec

February 8, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The Isles Quebec road trip finale will get underway this evening when the team enters the Centre Videotron for an 8 pm date with the Quebec Remparts. Charlottetown is currently 2-0 on this 2022 opening swing through Quebec after outscoring opponents 12-2 over the weekend. This will be a test for the Islanders tonight and we will see just how good this team is when the puck drops and the Isles look for some revenge after dropping the first meeting back in November. You can bet that Jim Hulton and Patrick Roy both had this match circled on the calendar since it was announced and that they will have their respective squads well prepared for battle. It's first versus third with both teams looking to make a statement.

The Remparts have a game in hand on the Islanders having played 32 to the Isles 33 matches so far. With a record of 22-9-1-0, Quebec is tied in points with second place Sherbrooke but sits in the third-place position of the QMJHL standings board. The Remparts have a trio of forwards currently leading the team with Rochette, Frenette, and Bolduc all within a point of each other at 39, 38, and 37. One of Quebec's bigger storylines this season though has been Nathan Gaucher who is NHL draft-eligible this year. Gaucher has recorded a record seventeen goals this season to go along with eleven assists. Nathan has been special this year for a very deep Remparts forward group.

Charlottetown became the first team in the Q to reach the fifty-point mark on Sunday after their 8-1 thrashing of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. One of the biggest stories over the weekend though was the captain himself, Brett Budgell. Budgell scored a goal with just under twenty seconds left to play in the game which was his 200th career QMJHL point. He joins Daniel Sprong and Filip Chlapik as the only men to do it wearing the black and harvest gold uniform. Xavier Simoneau and Patrick Guay also cracked the fifty-point marker over the weekend as they sit third and fourth in league point totals with Simoneau at 51 and Guay with 50. Eyes should still be on the trade deadline acquisitions tonight as all four players search for their first goal with their new squad.

Once again puck drop is set for 8 pm in Quebec for this highly anticipated clash between the two high-level teams. For those eager to follow along with the action, George Matthews and Cory Arsenault will provide the play-by-play live on Q93 FM and Q93.rocks!
