Game Preview: December 18 vs Cape Breton
December 18, 2021 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Charlottetown Islanders News Release
As we come to the final stop before the Christmas break, the Islanders currently find themselves on a three-game win streak after capturing victory over the Cape Breton Eagles last night. The 5-2 win proved to all hockey fans watching why driving the net is so important and that a hustle mentality does payoff. Depth players like Jarrett Todd and Keiran Gallant, big men in Ben Boyd and Noah Laaouan, and strong hustle players with William Trudeau, Xavier Simoneau, and Drew Elliott proved how well rounded and balanced this Isles squad truly is. Now, we look to the second installment of this back-to-back as the Islanders and Eagles face off again this evening at 7 pm. Charlottetown will be looking to extend the win streak to four and continue to certify their spot atop the league while the Eagles look for some revenge and try to get back in the win column before the holidays. The energy should be apparent from the get-go with this being the last trip on the ice until December 28th for the Islanders.
The Eagles losing skid reached six games now with the loss last night. Now with a record of 7-19-3-2, their spot at the bottom of the league continues to find itself falling into a bigger hole. After last night Cape Breton now finds themselves being outscored by the Islanders 17-6 in three meetings this season, with the Eagles never being able to score more than twice in any of the meetings. Island boys and brothers in Jacob and Cam Squires were noticeable in their first action on the Island this year but the player standing out to me the most was defenseman Jeremy Langlois. Langlois was the 17th overall pick by the Eagles in the 2019 draft and the Quebec City native has recorded 38 points in 100 career games. He is a 6'1" strong D-man who was able to keep the Isles clear of his goalie's crease even without having a stick at one point, he was still able to push people around. Jeremy is currently in the best year of his career and is definitely a name Isles fans should look out for tomorrow.
Even with the Islanders missing some key names last night, they continue to show us just how gritty they can be and that's how a team solidifies themselves as fierce competitors throughout the league. Efforts from depth guys like Jarrett Todd are what have put and kept the Islanders in good standing this year. Last night on a simple dump and chase play Todd hustled in and when the puck bounced right into the slot off the end boards, Todd was there to bury it home for his second of the year. I also am time and time again showed this season how much of a workhorse Keiran Gallant is. Gallant is a big reason why the Isles penalty kill has been effective this season sitting at a 86% kill rate and are averaging about 2.5 goals against per game. Xavier Simoneau's return to the lineup also put a spark in the squad as having one of their best playmakers around again helps keep the puck moving quickly. Simoneau tallied one assist in his return to add to his league-leading 32.
After stopping twelve of fourteen shots in the win last night, Goobie will hand the duties over to Oliver Satny for this bout. Satny has a 9-3 record this season and is fourth in the league for GAA with a 2.52 rating.
