LAST TIME OUT: Anthony Volpe lifted the Tampa Tarpons to victory with a game-tying home run in the 7th and a walk-off blast in the 9th in a come-from-behind win, 7-6, over the Bradenton Marauders on Saturday night at GMS Field...In the 1st, Volpe (3-for-5, 2HR, 3B, 4RBI, 3R) tripled and scored on a 2-run HR by Austin Wells (2-for-4, HR, 2RBI, 2R) that opened the scoring...Bradenton scored five-straight runs, including a 3-run, 2-out rally in the 3rd and a pair of RBI singles in the 5th and 6th...RHP Beck Way started for Tampa, yielding 2ER over 2.2IP (1H, 3BB, 1K, 43P/20S)...RHP Matt Sauer (4.2IP, 8H, 4R/3ER, 2BB, 5K, HB, 2WP, 85P/59S) pitched in relief...In the 7th, after a pair of walks, Volpe tied the game at 5-5 with an opposite-field HR...Later in the frame, Andres Chaparro (1-for-1, BB, HBP, Sac-F, RBI) hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly...Bradenton pushed across the tying run in the 8th before RHP Trevor Holloway (W, 7-1)(BS, 1)(1.2IP, 1BB, 1K) tossed a perfect 9th...Volpe led off the bottom of the 9th and crushed an 0-2 curveball well over the left field wall to win the game.
STATCAST: In the bottom of the 7th, Anthony Volpe connected on a 98 mph fastball from RHP Oliver Mateo for a game-tying 3-run HR. The ball was hit off the facing of the Seminole Hard Rock Cabanas beyond the wall in right-center and, according to Statcast, was hit with an exit velocity of 107 mph.
DOUBLE DINGERS: Last night, Anthony Volpe became the seventh Tarpons batter to log a multi-HR game this season. Chad Bell was the last to do so at Clearwater on 6/11. Josh Smith did so in Game 2 of a doubleheader on 6/5. Anthony Volpe and Elijah Dunham both did so during Game Two of a doubleheader on 6/3. Trevor Hauver (5/4) and Pat DeMarco (5/5) accomplished the feat during the opening week of the season.
VOLPE STREAKING: Last night, Anthony Volpe extended his hitting streak to 15 games, which is the longest hitting streak in the Southeast League. The 20-year-old is batting .440 (22-for-50) with 13R, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 6HR, 17RBI, 11BB and 5SB in that span.
300 CLUB: After scoring a dozen runs last Sunday, the Tarpons became the first team in Minor League Baseball to score 300 runs in 2021. Tampa enters today with an MiLB-best 323 runs scored (7.88/G), which is 11 more than next on the list: Triple-A Reno (312 runs). No other team in the Southeast League has scored more than 245 runs (Bradenton). Anthony Volpe (36R) is currently tied for the league-lead in runs scored, with Austin Wells (34R) ranking 4th, Elijah Dunham (32R) ranking 5th, Andres Chaparro (31R) tied for 6th, Pat DeMarco (29R) ranking 8th and Trevor Hauver (26R) tied for 12th.
VS. BRADENTON: Today, the Tarpons will continue a six-game series against the Bradenton Marauders. Bradenton currently leads the season-series, 3-2. The teams are scheduled to square off a total of 12 times throughout the season. In 2019, Tampa finished 8-9 against Bradenton, going 5-4 at home.
LEAGUE LEADERS: The Tarpons enter today leading the Southeast League in several categories, including runs (323), hits (366), RBI (294), doubles (82), home runs (59), walks (258), AVG (.268), OBP (.392) and SLG (.474). The Tarpons have six players ranked among the top-10 RBI leaders in the league, including: Austin Wells (T-1st, 36RBI), Anthony Volpe (T-1st, 36RBI), Pat DeMarco (4th, 28RBI), Trevor Hauver (T-5th, 27RBI), Andres Chaparro (T-5th, 27RBI) and Elijah Dunham (9th, 25RBI).
VOLPE WINS POW: Last week, INF Anthony Volpe was announced as the Southeast League Player of the Week (May 31-June 6). After going 0-for-4 on 6/1, Volpe finished the week with multiple hits in 4 of his last 5 games, batting .526 (10-for-19, 2 2Bs, 3B, 2HR, 4BB, 7RBI, 6R, 3SB) in that span. On 6/3 vs. Lakeland, the 20-year-old logged his first-career multi-HR game, including a career-high 6RBI (3-for-5, 2HR, 2B, BB, 2R). Volpe becomes the second Tarpons INF to win POW, joining INF Trevor Hauver (May 4-9).
