 Corpus Christi Hooks

Game Notes, April 19 Vs. Frisco

April 19, 2012 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

Frisco (8-4) @ Corpus Christi (5-7)

The Hooks return to Whataburger Field to begin their second home stand of the 2012 season tonight against the Frisco RoughRiders. Tonight's game, which begins a four-game series, marks the first meeting between divisional foes in the Texas League this season. The Hooks and RoughRiders will play each other 32 times this year.

Corpus Christi looks to snap a four-game losing streak after falling at Tulsa 4-0 Tuesday night. Lefty Edwar Cabrera was three outs away from a perfect game when catcher Chris Wallace pounded a single back through the box on the first pitch from Cabrera in the ninth. Wallace's single was Corpus Christi's lone hit - marking the second time in franchise history the Hooks have been held to just one hit in a game.

The RoughRiders have won four of five despite Tuesday afternoon's 5-4 setback at Arkansas. Frisco stands 4-2 on the road.

Tonight's Matchup:

RHP Barret Loux (2-0, 1.69) vs. RHP Jose Cisnero (1-0, 0.00)

Loux, signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent in November of 2010, makes his third start this season. Last Friday at home against Springfield, Loux limited the Cardinals to two runs on eight hits and a pair of walks over 5.2 innings in an 8-6 Frisco win. Loux struck out five. He's managed a 1.69 ERA after two starts even though Texas League hitters are batting .341 against the former Texas A&M star. In his junior year (2010) with the Aggies, Loux went 11-2 with a 2.83 ERA, with 136 strikeouts in 105.0 innings. Those numbers brought him acclaim as a First Team All-Big 12 selection, a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American and a semi-finalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.

- Started 21 games last year for Myrtle Beach in the Carolina League, going 8-5 with a 3.80 ERA

- Ranked second in the Carolina League with 127 strikeouts (in 109.0 IP)

- Originally the sixth pick in the 2010 draft by Arizona, but didn't sign and was later declared a free agent

Cisnero, signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in December of 2007, makes his third start of the season as well. Last Friday at Northwest Arkansas, Cisnero blanked the Naturals on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven during a 98-pitch effort, picking up his first decision in Corpus Christi's 12-2 rout. Adding in his final two starts of the 2011 season with Lancaster, Cisnero has not allowed a run in 21.0 consecutive innings. The last time Cisnero was touched for runs came in his next-to-last start last year, August 23 at Inland Empire, when the 66ers got to him for three runs in the bottom of the second. Last year, as a stalwart in Lancaster's rotation, Cisnero led all Houston farmhands and ranked sixth in the California League with 152 strikeouts. Selected Lancaster's pitcher of the month twice last season (May and July), Cisnero led the JetHawks in starts (27) and tied for the team lead in wins (8).

- Has 386 career strikeouts in 351.0 innings (9.90 Ks per 9 innings)

- Failed to finish the second inning on 6 occasions last year (0-5, 39.27 ERA)...in other 21 starts was 8-6 with a 3.96 ERA

- Ranked third in strikeouts (126) and sixth in ERA (3.65) in the Astros organization pitching for Lexington in 2010

"One hit, is that all we got -

Since these notes are "PG" rated, we'll end that famous quote from Harry Doyle right there. But, that's all the Hooks got Tuesday night at Tulsa. Tuesday's game marked the second time in franchise history the Hooks were held to a single hit. The only other occurrence came April 7, 2006, at Whataburger Field in a 5-0 loss to San Antonio. Yorman Bazardo, Jason Mackintosh and Mike Flannery combined on that one-hitter.

The common thread in the two games? The man who got the one hit for the Hooks was the catcher. J.R. House singled with two outs in the fourth inning in the game six years ago, while Wallace delivered the ninth-inning single Tuesday.

Streaks ended

Two significant hitting streaks were ended by Cabrera Tuesday night. Jon Singleton's 8-gamer came to a halt, though Singleton made pretty decent contact during his 0-for-3. Brandon Barnes saw his 6-game streak come to a close. Barnes also suffered an 0-for-3 fate. And, not only did his hitting streak come to an end, but Barnes' streak of doubles in six consecutive games also ended.

Two is all you get

The Hooks were stymied by Tulsa's pitching and defense at ONEOK Field. The only runs scored by the Hooks in that series were solo home runs by Jacob Goebbert and Jose Martinez. In the three-game set, the Hooks batted just .160 as a team and were only 1-for-15 (.067) with runners in scoring position. The Hooks entered the series with a team batting average of .281 and a team average of .313 with runners in scoring position.

Bodie milestone watch

Manager Keith Bodie is 9 wins away from milestone win number 1,000 in his pro career. In this his 16th season as a manager in the minor leagues, Bodie enters play tonight with a career regular-season record of 991-932 (.515 winning percentage). Adding this season to his four years at the helm with Wichita, Bodie's managerial record in the Texas League stands at 311-254.
