'Berta Bound

From the Rose City to Wild Rose Country, the Winterhawks have made the 864-mile trek to Red Deer to kick off a run of six games in nine nights against the Central Division clubs. Portland went 5-0-0-1 against the Central in 2022-23, when each club came to the VMC. Now, of course, the roles are reversed, and the Hawks are looking forward to the challenge ahead - particularly the five Alberta natives on the roster.

"I'm going to have lots of family at all three of the games this weekend because it's not too far (from home). I grew up in Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton, like my grandparents lived in Edmonton so I was always up there in the summers. I'm really excited to get started and play those teams for the first time in my WHL career," said Marcus Nguyen.

Know Your Enemy

Red Deer was the only Central Division team to beat the Winterhawks last season, picking up a 5-4 shootout win in Portland back in February. The reigning division champs haven't had the start they wanted to this year, however, ranking ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 4-6-0-1 record.

Still, the Rebels boast a talented lineup, led by Ottawa Senators prospect Carson Latimer (F), Nashville Predators prospect Kalan Lind (F) and Buffalo Sabres prospect Mats Lindgren (D). They also feature a familiar face in former Winterhawk Nick Andrusiak, who was dealt to the Rebels at last season's trade deadline. It's an undeniably talented team that hasn't lived up to expectations thus far, and with losses in three straight games, look for a hungry Red Deer club during tonight's tilt.
