January Recap
As we hit the final game of January tonight, the Winterhawks have won four straight games and own real momentum heading into the final third of the regular season. Portland has taken over the top point percentage in the Western Conference thanks to a remarkable 8-1-1-0 record in January, including two wins over Prince George and one over Everett - the team's two top contenders for the conference title.
Now, the final third of the season awaits with 23 games to go in the regular-season slate. The Hawks have set themselves up well for a title charge in the Western Conference and the WHL, and they'll look to keep the good vibes going as the calendar flips to February.
Grounding The Rockets
The Hawks knocked off tonight's opponent in their barn just two weeks ago, a 5-4 thriller that saw Nate Danielson net a goal and an assist in his Winterhawks debut. Portland relied on a three-goal second period to take the win over Kelowna on Jan. 17, but the Rockets showed some strength in the third as Tij Iginla and Andrew Cristall brought the Rockets from a three-goal hole to back within a goal.
These two clubs have played a pair of classics this season, with Portland also taking a 6-5 OT win on Sept. 23, 2023. With goals aplenty and tight finishes in both meetings, we could be in for two fantastic games tonight and Friday as the season series shifts to the Rose City. Look for Iginla and Cristall to again lead the way for the Rockets, as well as Ethan Neutens, who has three points in the season series thus far.
Howdy, Schelts!
A familiar face returns to the Portland sports scene tonight after beginning his career here. No, we're not talking about Damian Lillard - it's Luke Schelter! The Centennial, Colo. native is set to play his first game back in the VMC since being acquired by the Rockets on Dec. 8, 2023.
Schelter posted 21 goals, 34 assists and 55 points in 145 games with the Winterhawks from 2020-2023, and has five points in 18 games with the Rockets since the trade. Now sporting #10, be sure to give Schelts a hand when he's recognized on the video board during tonight's game!
Busy Night On Campus
Of course, Damian Lillard is also making his Rose City return tonight, and that means it's a busy one around the arenas as the Trail Blazers battle the Milwaukee Bucks. Winterhawks fans' parking will be in the East/West garages tonight - the East garage will be open at 3:00 P.M., and the West garage will be open at 5:00 P.M for fans to arrive early and beat the traffic. VMC doors will open at 6:00 P.M., and Dr. Jack's is open at 4:00 P.M. for fans wishing to hang out before puck drop - should be a fun night at the Rose Quarter!
