LA Galaxy News Release

CARSON, CA (Tuesday, February 03, 2004) - The Los Angeles Galaxy have signed Austrian international midfielder Andreas Herzog as a 2004 Discovery Player, it was announced today by Galaxy Vice-President and General Manager Doug Hamilton. A veteran of the German and Austrian Bundesligas, Herzog is a playmaking midfielder known for his dangerous left foot, who possesses a true scorer's finishing touch. No financial terms of the Major League Soccer (MLS) contract were announced.

Herzog, who becomes the first Austrian in Galaxy and MLS history, has performed at the highest levels for both club and country. In 1996, he captured a UEFA Cup with Bayern Munich. A two-time FIFA World Cup finalist, he represented Austria in 1990 and 1998.

"The acquisition of Andreas provides the Galaxy with a player who possesses great ability and a proven track record at the highest levels," said Hamilton. "He is technically sound, a player whose vision and passing can open the game for his teammates as well as make him a threat on goal."

Herzog joins the Galaxy after spending a total of seven seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga and ten seasons in German Bundesliga, playing in 403 games and scoring 99 goals during that period. Most recently, Herzog returned to the Austrian First Division with Rapid Vienna, the club that gave him his start, for the 2002-03 season before stepping away from the team.

"I'm very excited to be joining the L.A. Galaxy," Herzog said. "Not only am I thrilled at the opportunity to come to the United States and play, but also to be able to suit up for the marquee club in MLS. This is a club that has the talent to make another run at the MLS Cup in 2004 and I hope to be a major part of that."

The 6-0, 176-pound midfielder spent time with Rapid Vienna (1987-1988, 1988-92) and a brief stint with First Vienna (1987-88) for a portion of that season. The Austrian international played in 139 games, scoring 39 goals. He made his professional debut in 1987 with Rapid Vienna and went on to play six seasons with that club and one with First Vienna (1987-88).

"Andreas will be a big plus for the Galaxy because he knows how to manage the game for his side. Additionally, he can create for others as well as finish the play himself," said L.A. Galaxy Head Coach Sigi Schmid. "He has proven himself in the German Bundesliga and has always played for teams that have either been champions or contended for championship titles."

Herzog played for eight seasons in the German Bundesliga with SV Werder Bremen (1992-1995 and 1997-2002) and two with Bayern Munich (1995-1997), scoring 69 goals in 264 games in the top German league. The Austrian native helped guide Bayern Munich to a UEFA Cup title in 1996, lifting the cup with legendary German teammates Jurgen Klinnsman and Lothar Matthaus. In addition, he also captured two German Cup titles (1994 and 1999) and a League Cup title (1999), all with Werder Bremen.

A current member of the Austrian National Team, Herzog is one of an exclusive circle of players with a "Century of Caps" for his national team. The Austrian native made his international debut with Austria during a friendly on June 4, 1988, in a 2-2 draw against Greece in Athinai, Greece. He has since appeared in 103 games with the national side scoring 26 goals over 17 years while helping the squad post a 37-43-23 (W-L-T) record. Throughout his career, Herzog has played at every level including FIFA World Cups (6), World Cup Qualifiers (37), European Championship Qualifiers (20), and International Friendlies (40).

A member of Austria's 1990 and 1998 FIFA World Cup squads, Herzog appeared six times including facing Cameroon, Chile, Czechoslovakia, Italy (twice) and the United States. He scored the lone goal against Italy converting a penalty kick in a 2-1 loss in Paris, France on June 23, 1998.

Los Angeles Galaxy tickets are now on sale for the 2004 season at The Home Depot Center, who open their ninth season in MLS with a match against the New England Revolution at 7 pm (PT) on Saturday April 3, 2004.
