Galaxy announce list of protected and unprotected players

CaRSON, CA (Wednesday, November 17, 2004) - The Los Angeles Galaxy announced today the list of the club's protected and unprotected players prior to Major League Soccer's 2004 Expansion Draft on Friday, November 19th at 1:00 p.m. PT. The 2004 Expansion Draft will be televised live on ESPNEWS. Current MLS teams were allowed to protect 12 players on their Senior Roster.

The following are the Galaxy's 12 protected players:

Forwards: Carlos Ruiz, Jovan Kirovski, Alejandro Moreno, Joseph Ngwenya Midfielders: Cobi Jones, Sasha Victorine, Peter Vagenas Defenders: Chris Albright, Danny Califf, Tyrone Marshall, Ryan Suarez Goalkeeper: Kevin Hartman

The following players were left unprotected by Galaxy:

Midfielders: Arturo Torres, Marcelo Saragosa Defender: Paul Broome Goalkeeper: Dan Popik

Los Angeles' Project-40 players M Josh Gardner, M Ned Grabavoy, M Guillermo Gonzalez and Developmental players D Chris Aloisi, F Alan Gordon, D Scot Thompson are automatically protected in the 2004 Expansion Draft.

In addition, Galaxy midfielder Andreas Herzog and defender Hong Myung Bo retired at the conclusion of the 2004 season and therefore will not be available for selection in Friday's draft.

Current teams can only lose a maximum of three players in the Expansion Draft. Also, once a player has been claimed from a current team's non-protected roster, that same team may move a player from its non-protected roster to its protected roster. The rights to unprotected players who are not selected by Real Salt Lake or CD Chivas USA in the Expansion Draft will be retained by their original clubs.
