Winston-Salem Dash News Release
KINSTON, NC (APRIL 10, 2011) - Ian Gac's sixth-inning home run pushed the Dash into the lead and Winston-Salem held on to defeat the Kinston Indians 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Grainger Stadium. The win gave the Dash the series victory as Winston got solid pitching for the second straight game.
After Winston-Salem (2-1) left men on base in each of the first four innings, the Kinston offense cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth against Hector Santiago. Abner Abreu doubled and scored on Jeremie Tice's single to left to give the Indians (1-2) a 1-0 lead.
K-Tribe starter Clayton Cook pitched well through five innings, but walked Jose Martinez to start the sixth. Two batters later, Gac blasted the first pitch he saw from Cook over the wall in left-centerfield for his second home run of the season. The homer gave Winston a 2-1 lead and knocked Cook from the game.
Reliever Chris Jones entered the game for Cook and surrendered back-to-back doubles to Nick Ciolli and Kyle Shelton to bring home another run for the Dash.
The Indians got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning after Ryan Kussmaul gave up a single and a double to the first two batters of the frame. Adam Abraham hit a sacrifice fly to narrow Winston's lead to 3-2, but could not get any closer than that the rest of the game.
Martinez doubled home another Dash run in the seventh inning to up the lead back to two runs. Winston's bullpen took over from there, as the Indians only managed an infield single over the final three frames.
Kussmaul (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of relief while Cook (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up two runs over 5.1 innings. Tyson Corley collected his first save of the season with two scoreless innings to close out the ballgame.
Notes: Gac is 2 for 12 this season, but both of his hits have been two-run home runs. He has hit 129 home runs in his nine-year professional career... Dash pitchers have had double-digit strikeout totals in each of the first three games of the season. After 11 more strikeouts on Sunday, the team has fanned 35 for the season... Martinez had his third straight multi-hit game (2 for 4) and his now batting .615 on the season (8 for 13)...
The Dash continues its season-opening road trip on Monday night when Winston-Salem heads to Potomac to take on the Nationals in a re-match of last year's Mills Cup Championship Series. RHP Cameron Bayne makes his Dash debut against RHP Paul Demny. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Pfitzner Stadium. The audio webcast of the contest starts at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
Winston begins its home slate at BB&T Ballpark on Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m. against the Indians. Fans may purchase tickets for every Dash game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com .
