Gabrielle Carle Called up to Canadian National Team for 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Washington, D.C. - Washington Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle has been called up to the Canadian Women's National Team for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, Canada Soccer announced today.

Carle has represented Canada in over 50 matches including during the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Carle was an alternate for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and was capped for the first time at 16 years old. Since 2015, Carle has played in 53 matches (26 starts), scoring five goals and adding two assists. She made her debut in the Canadian national youth program in 2013 at 14 years old and hails from Lévis, Quebec.

As part of Group B, Canada will take on host nation Australia in addition to Ireland and Nigeria in the group stage of this summer's World Cup. The 2021 Tokyo Olympics gold medalists will kick off their debut in Australia, playing group stage matches in Melbourne and Perth:

vs Nigeria, Thursday, July 20 at 10:30 p.m. EDT (Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne)

vs Ireland, Wednesday, July 26 at 8 a.m. EDT (Perth Rectangular Stadium, Perth)

vs Australia, Monday, July 31 at 6 a.m. EDT (Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne)

Should Canada place in the top two of Group B, the team will advance to the knockout stage, which features a 16-team single elimination bracket.

Before joining the Spirit, Carle played one year of professional soccer with Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women's soccer in Sweden. There, she logged nearly 1,900 minutes in 22 matches, scoring two goals and adding one assist. Prior to playing professional soccer, Carle was a two-time national champion (2018, 2021) under current Spirit President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian at Florida State and was a part of a 2021 Seminole backline that allowed only 13 goals in 25 games.

The Spirit's next home match will be on Saturday, July 28 when the team takes on NJ/NY Gotham FC. The club announced earlier this offseason that all 14 home matches will be played for the first time at Audi Field in Buzzard Point, ensuring players and fans alike access to a facility befitting a professional club.
