Gaber's Overtime Tally Helps Upend Capitols, 3-2

In their only game this weekend, the Dubuque Fighting Saints won in thrilling fashion as they beat the Madison Capitols 3-2 in overtime. Riese Gaber scored 21 seconds in to the extra period on a feed from Matias Maccelli and the tandem that has teamed up for three overtime goals this season did it again for Dubuque. Gaber swept a feed from Maccelli along the ice past the outstretched pad of Joey Lamoreaux for the win.

-Gaber and Maccelli teamed up on the previous overtime win for Dubuque, just in reverse order. Gaber dished to Maccelli in Green Bay to win three two in late December. On the game winner tonight, Gaber used his speed to stay with Maccelli and the Finnish winger delivered a perfect feed.

-Matias Maccelli got things started for Dubuque with his third power play goal of the season. The goal 12:20 in came on a snipe from the left circle as Maccelli walked in with time and space. The Fighting Saints forward picked up assists from James Sanchez and Jacob Semik

-Joey Lamoreaux kept the Capitols down by just one with his performance in the first period. The Capitols netminder turned away 15 pucks, including two grade A chances from Maccelli. Lamoreaux was under siege, especially early, but kept the score close after 20.

-The Capitols clawed back in the third period, with two goals in the first three minutes. Madison tallied shorthanded to equalize and then after a Knierim power play goal, came right back with a Kistoff Papp score just 10 seconds later.

-Verners Egle was buzzing against his former team. Egle had a golden chance turned away by Lamoreaux in the second period, but he was once again a noticeable force for Dubuque. Egle finished the game with 7 shots.

-Matthew Thiessen was busy in the second period of the game as he turned away 13 Madison shots in his busiest period of the evening. Thiessen was able to make a few key saves and also benefitted from a post off a break away from Alex Mella.

-Madison tallied a shorthanded goal to begin the third period. The shorty was the 5th Dubuque has allowed this season. Dubuque was dynamic on the power play with two goals in six attempts on the evening as special teams were key in the game.

-This was Dubuque's only game of the weekend, but with the victory and loss from Youngstown, Dubuque has a little separation from the Phantoms for the time being. However, Cedar Rapids won and kept pace with Dubuque in the standings.
