G-Braves Offense Misses McCann in Loss

August 14, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves lost a healthy Brian McCann from their lineup today, and a 5-0 contest to the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. McCann, who was on a ML Rehab for Atlanta for the last two games before being activated down at Turner Field today, was missed as a hefty bat in an offensively challenged Gwinnett lineup today. The G-Braves (67-55) remain in second place in the International League South at 1.5 games behind Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 1.5 game margin behind Lehigh Valley. The Red Sox (69-52) remain in first place in the IL North (all figures at press time).

It Was Over When: Gwinnett was out of it early on. After a scoreless 1st inning, G-Braves starting pitcher Yohan Flande allowed a homer, double, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to lead off the 2nd frame for a 2-0 Gwinnett deficit that would widen as the contest wore on.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting LHP Flande (7-7) went 5.0 IP, allowing 5 R/ER on 7 H with 4 BB and 2 K's in defeat.

At the Plate: The McCann-less offense managed just 2 hits on the day, with Wilkin Castillo (playing a rare 3B) getting one and SS Brandon Hicks (a late defensive replacement on his day off) finding the other. The worst news, though, was the loss of SS Tyler Pastornicky, who exited the game with an apparent right leg injury after getting pulled off second base in a steal attempt in the 6th inning.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Red Sox starting RHP Matt Fox (8-4) tossed a complete game, going 9 impressive scoreless innings and allowing just 2 H, 1 BB and 7 K's.

At the Plate: Pawtucket knocked Braves around with 8 hits, paced by DH Daniel Nava (1-for-4, HR), CF Che-Hsuan Lin (1-for-4) and Nate Spears (2-for-2), who each had an RBI. Right fielder Ryan Kalish had an odd 0-for-3, 2 RBI game.

On Deck: The G-Braves take on Pawtucket in the fourth and final game of this series and homestand against the Red Sox, Monday evening at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out RHP Erik Cordier (4-8, 5.35) against Paw Sox RHP Brandon Duckworth (8-6, 3.94). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM, as well as on TV at CSS. Fans can also follow at www.twitter.com/GwinnettBraves1, gametracker on www.gwinnettbraves.com or MiLB TV at www.MiLB.com.

Etc: Monday night, the G-Braves are asking fans to bring a toy for the Charity Toy Drive that will highlight tomorrow's Family Game Night, featuring games with great prizes throughout the inning breaks of the game.
