G-Braves Lose First Road game, 2-1

The Lead: The Charlotte Knights defeated the Gwinnett Braves 2-1 Thursday at Knight's Castle in Fort Mill, SC. The Braves stranded eight men on base and failed again to get the big hit. Todd Redmond pitched seven innings, and suffered the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. Jeff Marquez was the winning pitcher for the Knights, working five scoreless to run his record to 1-1, and reliever Greg Aquino notched his first save of the season. Charlotte (6-3) is tied for first place with Durham in the International League South. The Bulls lost to Norfolk 6-2 in their home opener. Gwinnett (2-6) has lost five straight games and remains in fourth in the IL South.

It Was Over When: Charlotte center fielder Jordan Danks broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer to right off Todd Redmond in the bottom of the 4th. Designated hitter Josh Kroeger then hit a triple to right and scored on the continuation of the play on an overthrow at third by Braves second baseman Joe Thurston.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Redmond went 7.0 innings, allowing 2R/ER while posting 9 strikeouts and no walks. He retired the next ten in a row after the Kroeger triple. Scott Proctor relieved Redmond, gave up two singles but no runs in his one inning of work. He finished with 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ER, K. .

At the plate: Mitch Jones was 2-for-4, Brent Clevlen 1-for-4 with a double. The only G-Braves run was knocked in by J.C. Holt in the top of the ninth with a groundout to second that scored Clevlen.

Knights Beat:

On the Mound: Jeff Marquez picks up his first win of the season working five scoreless innings. He finished 5 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 3 K. Former major league pitcher Scott Elarton worked two scoreless and finished 2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K. Greg Aquino picked up his first save of the season, going: 2 IP, 2 H, 1R/ER, 2 K.

At the plate: Danks was 1-for-4 with his second homerun of the season. C.J. Retherford was 2-for-4 with two singles.

On Deck: Charlotte hosts Gwinnett in game two of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. at Knight's Castle. Braves RHP Ryne Reynoso (0-1, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Matt Zaleski (1-0, 1.50 ERA) of the Knights.
