Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves cruised past the Rochester Red Wings 7-3 on Thursday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett's offense opened up once again tonight to help converted reliever Yohan Flande get his first win as a starting pitcher in 2011. The G-Braves (22-18) remain in second place in the International League South division at 1.5 games behind Durham with the victory, while the Red Wings (15-23) move into last place in the IL North in the loss (both figures at press time).
It Was Over When: Down 1-0 in their first trip to the plate in bottom 1st, Gwinnett started a short but bad night for their former compatriot Scott Diamond with a pair of runs on four players reaching base without notching a single hit. The G-Braves wouldn't look back on that 2-1 lead after one.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting LHP Yohan Flande (2-0) went 5.0 IP, allowing 9 hits with 3 R/ER and walked 2 versus 1 strikeout. RHP Cory Gearrin, in his first appearance since being optioned back to Gwinnett from Atlanta yesterday, notched his first save of the year.
At the plate: Six different G-Braves had an RBI in the win, paced by RF Wilkin Ramirez with a 3-for-4 night with a HR and RBI. He and SS Brandon Hicks went back-to-back on the long ball in the bottom of the 8th inning, and Hicks finished 1-for-4 with a HR and RBI.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Rochester starter and 2010 G-Brave LHP Scott Diamond(1-4) didn't fare so well in his return to Coolray Field. He went just 2.1 IP, yielding 6 R/5 ER on 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. He also threw a wild pitch. Diamond's last start at Coolray Field was a two-hit complete game shutout for Gwinnett on last season's home finale on 8/30/10.
At the Plate: The Red Wings CF Jason Repko went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI to lead his squad in defeat.
On Deck: The G-Braves play the final game of the homestand and the four game series against Rochester on Friday night at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett LHP Mike Minor (2-1, 2.22 ERA) will go against Red Wings RHP Andy Baldwin (2-3, 6.68 ERA). The game can be heard on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
Etc: Every Friday is Fireworks Night at Coolray Field. All fans in attendance are invited to stay after the game when the Lawrenceville sky will be lit up with spectacular fireworks following the G-Braves game.
