Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves dropped the finale of their mini, four game homestand in a 3-2 heartbreaker in 10 innings to the Indianapolis Indians at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA, on Tuesday night. The offense of the past two days finally dried up for Gwinnett, as they couldn't support a fine pitching performance by Todd Redmond. The team battled back late to send it into extra innings, but the bullpen couldn't hold the fort. The G-Braves (61-49) fall back into second place in the International League South at one game behind Durham, who won tonight, and are also now in second in the Wild Card race by a half-game with the loss. The Indians (58-54) remain in third place in the IL West with the win.
It Was Over When: After tying the game at 3-3 with a 9th inning rally, Gwinnett gave the lead right back in the 10th inning with closer Jairo Asencio failing to follow his scoreless 9th frame with another. After getting a lineout, Asencio yielded a walk, single and then a fielder's choice moved the winning run home.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting RHP Todd Redmond went 7.0 IP, allowing 2 R/ER on 6 H with a BB and 7 K's in a hard luck loss. The all-time Gwinnett wins leader for a pitcher has now yielded just 2 R or less in each of his last four starts. RHP Asencio (2-2) went 2.0 IP, allowing 1 R/ER on 2 H, 2 BB and a K in the loss.
At the Plate: Unlike the last couple of games, Gwinnett couldn't really get the bats going. Left fielder Wilkin Ramirez stayed rolling, going 2-for-5 with a RBI - his sixth in the last three games. First baseman Mauro Gomez was 1-for-4 with another RBI.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Indianapolis starting LHP Garrett Olson went 5.1 IP in which he allowed just 1 R/ER and 2 H. He did walk 5 against only 4 K's. RHP Tim Wood (2-0) went 2.1 IP, blew the save in the 9th inning, but got the win despite allowing 1 R.
At the Plate: Indians SS Jordy Mercer paced the squad with a 2-for-5, 1 RBI night. Former Braves prospect CF Gorkys Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a RBI, as well.
On Deck: The G-Braves have an off day tomorrow before hitting the road briefly for a two game set with IL South rivals the Charlotte Knights, beginning Thursday at 7:15 p.m. in Fort Mill, SC. Gwinnett will send out LHP Yohan Flande (7-5, 3.64) against Knights LHP Doug Davis (1-1, 1.50). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. Etc: Atlanta Braves prospect and RHP Randall Delgado was promoted to Gwinnett prior to tonight's game (from Double-A Mississippi) and will join the Braves rotation. His addition now gives the G-Braves all four top organizational pitching prospects and four of the top 100 prospects in all of baseball, according to Baseball America (along with RHP Julio Teheran, LHP Mike Minor, RHP Arodys Vizcaino).
