G-Braves Dropped by Knights, 7-4

August 7, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Gwinnett Braves couldn't solve the Knights, dropping the third of four games in the finale of the home-and-home series 7-4 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA, on Sunday afternoon. The day after newest pitching prospect Randall Delgado had a stunning debut at Gwinnett, the most famous of the Atlanta arms wasn't right as Julio Teheran had his shortest outing in a game not shortened by rain on the season. The G-Braves (62-52) remain in second place in the International League South, dropping two games behind Durham (late game pending). Gwinnett is also in second in the Wild Card race by a two game margin behind Pawtucket (late game pending). The Knights (55-60) remain in third place in the IL South with the loss.

It Was Over When: Gwinnett's ace Teheran wasn't feeling the burdensome heat out on the field, and didn't look himself as he allowed a leadoff homer in the 2nd inning and two more runs after that for a 3-0 hole the G-Braves couldn't dig out of today.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Teheran (12-2) went 3.0 IP, yielding 4 R/ER on 4 H with 4 BB and 5 K's in his first loss since May (5/30 vs. LHV). He has now given up 4 R in two straight starts - the most he's allowed in back-to-back go's this year. The bullpen portion of the G-Braves "Big 3" prospects, RHP Arodys Vizcaino, went another 2.0 IP in which he allowed an unearned run (thanks to an error) and struck out one batter.

At the Plate: Shortstop Tyler Pastornicky kept his hot bat cooking, going 2-for-5 with 2 RBI to extend his hitting streak to a G-Braves high 12 games in 2011 (tied with Jose Constanza and Mauro Gomez). Second baseman Ruben Gotay hit his third HR of the season, finishing up 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Also, newest catching acquisition Wil Nieves (from Milwaukee Brewers) has quietly notched a hit in each of the five games he's played in for Gwinnett, going 1-for-3 today.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Knights starting RHP Joe Bisenius (4-1) went 5.1 IP, yielding 3 R/ER on 5 H with 2 BB and 6 K's in the win. RHP Josh Kinney pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his 14th save of the season.

At the Plate: Charlotte 1B Dallas McPherson was 3-for-5 with a homer and 2 RBI, while SS Andrew Garcia went 2-for-4 with another 2 RBI.

On Deck: The G-Braves hit the road for five games at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's place in Pennsylvania, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. start on Monday night. Gwinnett will send out RHP Todd Redmond (7-8, 3.00) against Yankees LHP Greg Smith (3-2, 5.24). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
