Brampton Steelheads News Release

In the fifth round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection the Mississauga Steelheads welcomed forward Tyler Kleine to the team with the 81st overall pick.

The right winger from the small town of New Hamburg, Ontario brings size to the Steelheads group of forwards with his 6'2 160 pound frame. Tyler played his first year of AAA hockey this past season with the Kitchener Jr. Rangers of the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario, alongside fellow Steelheads draft pick Nicolas Hague.

With the Rangers, Tyler played in 31 games, scoring 4 goals and 2 assists; he also added 3 assists in the playoffs. His role on the team was primarily focused on playing a strong and physical defensive game. His efforts last season did not go unnoticed by his peers as he became selected as a 2013 Alliance Hockey All-Star.

Tyler's offensive production picked up during the 2014 OHL Cup where he recorded 1 goal and 2 assists in 4 games. Tyler earned Player of the Game honours in the Rangers 3-2 win over the TPH Thunder, where he finished the game with a goal and an assist.

While his offensive numbers certainly do not jump off of the page, Tyler has been praised for his strong work ethic and passion for the game. In regards to Tyler's efforts on the ice, his head coach in Kitchener, Dean DeSilva said "He caught everybody's attention with his desire and intensity" adding, "Scouts kept asking 'where did this kid come from?' They couldn't believe that he hadn't played AAA before."

Tyler's intensity for the game combined with his size and defensive role in Kitchener will be welcomed by the Steelheads as the team focuses on a hard working, physical style of hockey. With training camp right around the corner, Tyler will have his focus locked in on making an impression to Head Coach James Boyd and the rest of the Steelheads coaching staff in hopes of taking the next steps in his hockey career.
