Ontario Fury News Release
(Ontario, California) - The Ontario Fury came into their home opener Friday night against Tacoma knowing they would need a win if they planned on keeping pace in the Major Arena Soccer League's Western Conference.
And buoyed by a five-goal outburst from forward Franck Tayou, the Fury got the win they needed, beating the Tacoma Stars 10-7 at Toyota Arena.
Tayou took over the game in the third quarter for Ontario. Leading 3-2 after the opening 30 minutes, Tayou racked up three straight goals to open the third quarter scoring - the last two assisted by his brother Uzi, as Ontario took a 6-2 lead.
But the Stars struck back, as former Fury players Nick Perera and Alex Caceras teamed up on a pair of goals to pull Tacoma back within two. Ontario briefly took a three-goal lead back in the final minute of the third quarter, as Juan Carlos Gonzalez potted his first goal of the year - and 66th of his Ontario career, making him the team's all-time leading goal scorer - on an assist from Israel Sesay. But the Stars answered with four seconds left, as Jamael Cox sent the game to the final quarter 7-5.
In the fourth, Justin Stinson turned the momentum right back in the Fury's favor, intercepting an errant touch and putting it in the back of the net for his second goal of the game. Sesay - who also had five blocked shots in the game - broke the Stars push with 9:03 to go, putting home a pass from Jermaine Jones to give Ontario a three-goal lead. Then Edson Cardona put a Jones' pass into the Stars' vacated net for the Fury's final goal.
The Fury's defense was swarming the entire game, as they were credited with 17 blocked shots, as Uzi Tayou matched Sesay's five blocks - including three in the final minutes with Tacoma playing with an extra attacker.
Franck Tayou finished with five goals, while Stinson had two goals and an assist. Jones had three assists in the winning effort.
Perera led the Stars' attack with three goals and two assists, while Caceres had a goal and two assists and Micheal Ramos had a pair of goals.
The Fury won't have long to bask in their first win, as they will face the resurgent Cal Turlock Express at 3 p.m. Sunday at Toyota Arena. Sunday's game will feature the annual Teddy Bear Toss, with fans encouraged to bring stuffed animals to throw on the field following Ontario's first goal.
Sunday's game will also feature an appearance by US Men's National Team star - and Montclair High School graduate - Nick Rimando. Tickets purchased through a special link on OntarioFury.com will go to benefit Montclair High athletics.
Tickets for the game are on sale at the Toyota Arena box office, online at OntarioFury.com or by calling the Fury's offices at 909-457-0252.
