MUSKEGON - By taking four of a possible six points over the week, the Muskegon Fury improved to 32-28-3-2 on the season. With 69 points, the Fury now sit in third place in the International Hockey League.
Thursday in Bloomington, the Fury erupted for four goals in the third period, including Cassidy Preston's first in his first career game, as the Fury downed the Bloomington Prairie Thunder, 6-1.
The Fury entered the third with a 2-1 lead. David Segal made it 3-1 firing a backhand past Dolson 5:58 into the period. The goal was Segal's fourth of the season, with an assist from Philippe Plante. Billy Collins made it 4-1 with 9:59 left in the game, off assists from Dan Riedel and Dave VanDrunen. Preston scored his goal 12:14 into the period on a 3-on-1 breakaway, taking a feed from Zalba and putting it in. Segal also assisted on the goal. Zalba capped off the night with his second of the game, his ninth of the season, with assists to Preston and David Herring with 4:17 left to give the Fury the 6-1 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the first period, despite Bloomington outshooting Muskegon 12-6. The Fury struck first when Adam Bartholomay sent a feed from behind the net to Dan Riedel, who connected for his 23rd of the season 7 minutes and 42 seconds into the first period. Just 19 seconds later, the Prairie Thunder answered when Neil Clark put in a rebound in front of the Muskegon net to make it 1-1. With 1:48 remaining in the second, Sheldon Wing brought the puck down ice for the Fury and fired a shot that was saved by Derek Dolson, but the rebound went right to Bill Zalba. Zalba put in the rebound for his eighth goal of the season, making it 2-1 in favor of Muskegon. Segal also assisted on the goal
Segal, who had five points entering the game, finished with three in the contest on a goal and two assists. Zalba also had three points for the Fury.
Friday in Bloomington, the Prairie Thunder returned the favor, downing Muskegon 8-2.
The Prairie Thunder struck three times in the first period. Leo Thomas made it 1-0 5 minutes and 32 seconds into the game on the 4-on-4, taking the feed from Don Parsons and beating Fury goalie Clayton Pool. Sam Miller made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal 15:05 into the first, then Adam Edinger struck 26 seconds later as Bloomington took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Prairie Thunder struck four times in the second, including three on the power play, to put the game out of reach for Muskegon. The Fury scored once with 2:55 left in the period off the stick of David Segal, his fifth of the year. Justin Rohr and Dan Riedel assisted on the goal.
Bloomington added another power play goal in the third before Billy Collins connected on his 29th of the year with 4:56 left to make it 8-2. Justin Rohr assisted on the goal.
Saturday night in Muskegon, Dan Riedel scored on the power play 2 minutes and 25 seconds into overtime to give the Muskegon Fury a 3-2 victory over the Port Huron Ice Hawks.
The Fury went on the man advantage 39 seconds into the extra session when Kris Vernarsky was whistled for hooking in front of the Port Huron net. The Fury controlled the action in the Port Huron zone for the majority of the power play, with Riedel taking a feed from Philippe Plante and firing a slap shot from the edge of the left circle into the net.
The game opened with a bang, with four players from each team receiving fighting major penalties just nine seconds into the game. Goaltenders Isaac Reichmuth of the Fury and Larry Sterling of the Ice Hawks were among the penalized. The teams went scoreless though the first period before the Fury's David Herring connected on his first of the season 4:25 into the second, making it 1-0 Muskegon. Riedel made it 2-0 with 55 seconds left in the second, taking a Mark Cadotte feed and blasting a shot past Sterling.
The Ice Hawks struck twice in the third. Jeff Zehr scored on the 5-on-3 4:16 into the third, then Jamie Carroll tied the game with just under eight minutes remaining, setting up the overtime session.
Riedel, the IHL's defending Rookie of the Week, extends his point streak to nine straight games. He has 25 goals on the season.
Clayton Pool came in relief of Reichmuth and got the win in net for the Fury, stopping 26 of the 28 shots he faced. Sterling took the loss, stopping 18 of the 21 shots he faced.
This week, the Fury play four games in a five-day span. Wednesday morning, Muskegon travels to Flint to take on the Generals. Friday, the Fury host the Prairie Thunder. Saturday, Muskegon plays at Fort Wayne before returning home Sunday afternoon to play Kalamazoo.
RIEDEL ON A ROLL
The Fury's Dan Riedel is currently on a nine-game point streak, the second-longest streak in the league. The IHL's defending Rookie of the Week scored five points (3G, 2A) and had a +5 plus-minus rating this week. His 25 goals and 44 points lead all Fury rookies.
MILESTONE WATCH
Philippe Plante needs five points for 300 in his career. Mark Cadotte is six assists away from 300 for his career and 13 goals shy of 200 for his career. David Segal is six games away from 100 for his career. Friday in Bloomington, Chris Kovalcik played the 200th game of his career.
