Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals took the rubber game of their three-game series with Frisco on Saturday night, holding on for a 4-2 win over the RoughRiders at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.

Springfield starter Brad Furnish was outstanding, working deeper than any Cardinals' starter this year. Furnish recorded two outs in the seventh inning, before leaving with a 3-1 lead and two men on base. Tyler Norrick came out of the bullpen and although he allowed a two-out single to Marcus Lemon to make it a one-run game, got out of the inning with the Cards in front 3-2.

After an Andrew Brown single in the eighth knocked in a run and made it a two-run game, Francisco Samuel tossed a scoreless ninth, working around a walk and a single to earn his third save of the year.

Both teams got a run in the third, as Springfield scored first to take a 1-0 lead against Jared Hyatt. Tyler Henley opened the inning with a double and then scored on an RBI single from Antonio Dejesus.

The Riders responded in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run off of Furnish. Craig Gentry reached with one out, as Tyler Henley couldn't make a running catch in right field.

The Cards took the lead for good with two in the sixth off of reliever Andrew Laughter (0-1). Daniel Descalso' infield single plated Steven Hill, as the Cards went up 2-1. A sac fly off the bat of Henley took the Springfield lead to 3-1.

Furnish (1-0) got the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. After walking five in five innings in his first start, Furnish walked just one batter on Saturday.

The Cards move to 5-4 with the win, while Frisco falls to 5-4. Looking for two straight and three of four on the road trip, the Redbirds send Tyler Herron (0-1) to the mound on Sunday afternoon in the series-opener at Midland. The RockHounds will go with right-hander Chris Farley (0-0). Game time on Sunday from Midland is 4pm.

After the three-game series in Midland, the Redbirds return home on Thursday, April 23rd, as they open a four-game home stand against Tulsa. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
